Return to Castle Wolfenstien Probs
I got Return to Castle Wolfenstien for X-mas, and installed it yesterday on my computer. It ran real good and smooth with all High quality settings (Reccommended). It also ran great earlier today. I had to stop to eat, so I turned my computer off.
After I had eaten, I went to play again, and I noticed that it runs like PURE SH*T now. I cant get it to run at all, even with Meduim detail settings and 640 resolution. The Cut Scenes never did play that well. What the hell gives? I restarted my computer like Three thousand times, and turned off all but the neccassary programs, and it still runs like 3 day old Dookie. ARGGHHHH. The games Awesome too. Anyone else got this game, and are having similar problems? |
Doh, sorry to hear about your troubles. I can't figure out why it would stop working all of the sudden, but I'd check for updates on all your drivers and make sure they are running fine.
Did you make any other changes to your computer prior to shutting it off that first time? Install any software, etc.. It just seems really strange that it would go to crap all of the sudden. Good Luck |
Try defragging it. I'm guessing the comp rearanged files when u shut it off. Also delete all your .tmp files.
|
....
How much memory do you have? How big is your swap file? What kind of video card do you have? I assume this is windows.
Sounds like a driver problem. Try updating your video drivers. |
I dont know much of diddly about computers. (The people at work though think I'm some kind of Technoligcal God because I know how to use e-mail and open icons on the desk top :D ).
My dad built my computer for me about 5-6 months ago. He set it up for Hi-Po gaming since all I really do is check the internet and play games on it. I'm not sure of the video card. I have 64 MB ram, and my computers clock speed is 875 MHZ with some Kind of Nividia G-Force card in it. I had to instal Direct X -8 to run Wolfenstien, and I suspect that thats were the problem resides. Some kind of hardware compatability problem. I dont know. I'll have to have my dad check it out when he gets here Friday. |
...
64MEg of RAm? :) Are you running Windows? You really should upgrade to at least 128. Windows is a memory hog and if you don't have enough physical ram the Os will go to the swapfile constantly. And that slows your system, especially games down considerably.
Upgrade video drivers and get more RAM :) When I went from 256 to 512, my Wolfenstein loading time was cut to 1/3 of it's original time. For the video drivers, go to the device manager and check to see what kind of card you have. Then if it is indeed an Nvidia card, go to www.nvidia.com and get the newest detonators. I bet that will fix your problem. BTW, there are an @ssload of Gforce cards. If you have an older model such as an MX200, there is no way you will be able to play with all the game options to high. Especially with 64mb of ram. Good luck and let me know what you find out. |
Hey merc,
Since you are still learning puters...here is a little help <BIGGEST DAMN FONT AVAILABLE>GET MORE RAM!!!!</BIGGEST DAMN FONT AVAILABLE>;) kidding aside, there are a few basics to speeding up your puter. 1. end all programs and tasks not needed (hit start, then run, then type MSCONFIG, go to start up and disable stuff not used. 2. (ties in with #1) Make sure you are NOT running virus software when playing game 3. Defrag your drives at least once every 2 months 4. GET MORE RAM!!! I couldn't believe you were trying to run Wolf with 64 mb...ram is really cheap right now (slowly rising) and you can get a 256 stick for about $40-$50! with that much ram you have, you really cant run wolf in high detail! hope this helps -ed |
Well if his dad built the computer up for performance that geforce might have 64mb of ram.... and if it ran good for a while it kinda rules the 64 mb of sysem memory problem out.
|
we...
not necessarily.... if he had just installed Direct X 8. All Direct X software uses alot of memory, especially if your video card is weak. Being that we don't know exactly what his video card is, we can't figure out if it's adequate. After rebooting windows and having the DX software install itself and eat up whatever was left of his 64MEG, there is no memory left for the system let alone Wolfenstein. I have checked and Wolfensteing uses around 220MEGS of RAM without touching the swapfile, you need at least that for the game to run good. Not including the memory the
system needs. Hey MErc: When you close windows (programs) does the screen redraw itself in chunks? |
Okay, I found the video card box in my closet (I finally after an hour and 30 minutes of driving in snow, got home). I'm not sure if its the card thats in my computer or not. Its GeForce2Max, 32 MB.
Every member in my family about has there own computer, even my little 5 year old sister has one. So i'm not sure if its my other younger sister (I have 3 of them) or if its mine. I'm going to reset my computer now so I can see what my MHZ and ram specs are for sure. I'll talk to my dad about putting more RAM in when he comes down Friday. If its that cheap I'll buy some. I remeber the days when 16 MB Ram was the Crap, and it cost you a good bit of money too. No it doesnt redraw in chunks. Yeah, the game itself would run perfect the first time I played it. Thats after I installed it and restarted the computer. Flawlessy. I was really impressed with it. I loved the original Wolfenstien when it first came out. The cut scenes though, did not run good. They had hang ups, stutters, and skips. When I went to play it again (Cant remember now if I shut the computer down before, or just left it on) It played like crap. It was like the cutscenes were. CRAP. Been that way since. I changed the details and all to Meduim settings (If my computer was slow, or out of date, why would it put the reccommended settings as high detail and stuff) and it still ran just as P!ss poor. |
GODSLAYER.
Okay, Here we go I found out what it is I have. I have a AMD 900 Mhz proccesor. 256 Meg Ram. a 64 MB Nivida Video card. According to my dad, and my computer thinga majjigy. So, I'm okay in the ram and Video card department then...Right? That speed should be adequate, shouldnt it? Oh, what it might be is I only have 66 percent of my ram Free thanks to all the stupid ***** I have running in the background. |
ummmm.....just try hitting the **** thing:D
|
See i was right :P he did have a 64mb card!
|
Pretty good for a drunk fireman!
Take care, -Chris |
hehe...
OKay that sounds adequate. Kill all the crap running in the background and defrag your hd. If that doesn't work, reinstall the game.
|
....
almost forgot.... search for a program called "RegCleaner." After you install it, there is a tab called "Startup List." Get rid of everything you don't need. I bet there is a ton of stuff in there that is doing nothing but eating memory. Let us know what happens. Good luck.
