Greetings!

Greetings Mustang drivers!

My name is Jesse and I have recently purchased my first Ford as a gift to myself. It's a 2002 mineral gray Mustang V6, 5-speed.
I opted to go with the 6 cylinder for the simple fact that at the age of 21, my insurance would have been nothing less than ridiculous if I drove a GT. However, I'm very much in love with my Mustang and it's sparked my interest in getting to know how my car works and how I could give it just a bit more HP. I'm quite new to the workings of engines, shocks, exhaust and things of that sort so I hope I don't get laughed at TOO much. :)

With that being said, I'd like to ask if there is anything small I can do to help get my pony a bit quicker. I don't plan on doing much to the car. A lot of people have told me that the money I could put into this car could've gone to the purchase of the 8-cylinder model. I tell them not to worry for my next Mustang will most definitely be heavy under the hood. :)

A big thank you in advance!

Hi Jesse!

Welcome to Mustang Works Online.

For improving performance of your V-6 I would strongly consider replacing the stock rear differential gears, perhaps 3.55's.
This is a $400. modification so you may wish to pass - or wait. If so, a K&N filter is a good investment and runs around $40. Easy install.

We look forward to hearing from you in the future but remember to post tech questions in the correct forum (Small Ponys) as this is a general discussion forum.

Many thanks for the warm welcome! I greatly appreciate your help and I'll be sure to put my tech questions in the right place next time. :) Mainly I just wanted to say HI! Thanks again!

Thanks so much for all the warm welcomes! I absolutely love my new mustang. So far she has treated me like a king. :) It won't be long before I return the favor by modifying her with all kinda of nice goodies...and asking a million question about how to do it. :D This site has helped me out a lot just by reading some of the past threads. Just incredible! Great job!

Not too much

Venom, it seems I'm always in the minority, but I wouldn't put a lot of $$$ in a V-6. Maybe a K&N and not too much more. If you need performance later, you'll want to trade up for a GT and THEN YOU"LL NEED MODS and need some $$$ for them. My opinion is don't waste much on the V-6.

I've learned a lot just being here and never posting. lol. Although I think all you guys are great, and I'm sure Ven that you'll find them to be interesting as well.

Hum...I feel the intimidation of not really owning a mustang wearing off. :)

I disagree with NOT modding a 99+ up V6. With gears and sticky tires you can already come close to spanking some 96-98 AOD GTs. Sure, the older V6s had 150 hp...lame-o. Almost 200 hp is not something that should be treated as just some commuter car. They even sound better than the older 3.8Ls. I say just add some sensible modifications...dual pipes, gears...not expensive, and they pay for themselves with the fun you'll have. Don't EVER let anyone tell you that a six is not worth it. Its worth it as long as YOU want to do it :)

VeNoM2002 01-22-2002 06:47 PM

I wasn't planning on going crazy with my new car, but I was thinking of going with dual pipes and perhaps some gears like Belle had said. I had some other little stuff that I have listed that I was thinking about, but like I said before, nothing crazy. Most of my friends think it's a miracle that I just have a mustang period. They like working on their cars but I don't believe they've done anything to their engines. Within my group of friends we have a '98 Ford Escort ZX2, a newer Dodge Intrepid, and an Expresso. (I think that's another name for a Neon...not quite sure.) The ZX2 has no engine mods, a couple of decals and a pretty good system...that's about it. The Intrepid has a really nice system but nothing else. I have to say the Expresso is interesting. Our buddy who owns this thing put on a brand new exhaust and claims that Ferrari made it. Well whatever it is, it sounds like a bumble bee on steroids at any RPM. He has his windows tinted, he put in new grills in the front, green neons in the front seats...and some other stuff I can't think of right now. I asked him if he wanted to race after my first oil change and he hasn't answered me yet, hehe. Sorry for the long post but that's pretty much the competition in my town...it's a small town. :p I've only seen a couple other mustangs driving around town so I really don't have anyone to chat to face to face. However, people have approached me and have said nice things about the car. I've had it just a bit over a week and it's gettin noticed very fast. :) So we'll just have to see what the future brings!
