abandoned car....how do I claim it???
Well about 10 min from my house, in another countey, on a side road is a 96-98 V-6 Mustang vert. It's been sitting there for about 2 weeks. The back glass is busted out and there is a LOT of water in the interior from when it rained. The bottom part of the front bummper has be riped off(looks like he hit something and riped it off) and the passenger side front fender is messed up. It has tags from my countey.
It has a set of 16" waffle rims on it. Is there anyway I can find out if it's abandoned.....if it is, can I just claim it? I'd like to get the rims, as well as the rear-end and the front spindels rotors, calapers, exc. Then I will have to parts to convert a fox body to 5-lug. of course I could always just go up there at about 1:00am and get the rims myself;)....j/k:D |

You could go to the local police station and ask them or call City Hall. |

Make nice with a cop, and get him(her;) ) to run the tags for you. Then give the person a call and ask them if you can buy it. Or get it towed, and then take it of the counties hands.

It's probably stolen, wrecked and ditched. Call the cops. If it is hot, and you are caught anywhere near it, or with parts off of it, you are just as guilty as if you had stolen it yourself.
Take care, -Chris |
I agree with PKRWUD. Call the authorities before you go doing anything.lol Cuz if you do Matlock won't even be able to help ya with that :) Or you could just use your original theory and go up there and take them.lol

No way can you just claim it. It's obviously stolen...even if some poor Stang driver didn't have the dough for a tow truck, it wouldn't be left to the elements in that condition. If it is stolen, then it will have to go through all the rigamarole of theft recovery status, auctioning, etc or whatever bureaucratic BS they do

If it was a boat, that was abandoned on the waterway, you could claim it... a car on the side of the road? Never heard that one:D Worth asking about though, I guess. Let us know how it turns out.

Mustang salvage
The 'Stang apparently was stolen and abandoned by the car thief(s).
No one just 'abandons' their late model Mustang convertible on some side road for over two weeks, open to the weather. By now, the owner has probably filed an insurance claim and in a few more weeks he would have collected. However, if you report the car to the police, they'll run the VIN and find it was reported stolen and notify the owner, who will then have to notify the insurance company and they'll appraise the damage and probably have it fixed, if possible. If not, it'll be 'totaled' (a rolling total it's called) and the insurance company will pay the owner it's current value and sell it at an auction or sell it back to the owner for the salvage value. Long process. Where does that leave you? Out of luck. You can be a good citizen and notify the cops about the abandoned Mustang but that's about it and frankly, they may have a few questions for you, too. I would stay away from that car and let someone else report it. Don't even think about snatching parts from it unless you're willing to take the chance of getting caught and all the hassle that goes with it. Not really worth it. Sorry, no late-model Mustangs are available as 'unclaimed salvage' on the side of the road.' Old wrecks, maybe, but not late '90's Mustang convertibles. Nice idea though. |
After reviewing some more insightful advice, let me advise you to go wipe your fingerprints off the car tonight. That way, when somebody else reports it, they won't be talking to you anyway;)
