Need some help here - - ->
I am in a contest of sorts with a friend of mine. He claims that he can come up with 45 words, using ONLY the letters below. The rules are:
(1) Words must be a minimum of four letters. (2) No letter may be used more than once, except for two "UÕs". (3) Singular or plural of a word but not both. (4) No proper names. I tried, and couldn't even come close, so I figured before admitting defeat, I'd see what you guys (and gals) could come up with. The letters are: A G O P R S U U Y |
spry, spray, soar, soap, soapy, yoga, pray
I don't think I understand rule #2 and why are there 2 'u's |
pour, , sugar, your, soup, syrup
Sorry man, I had about 25 words, till I caught snap to rule #1. It's been a long week. |
Here are 75 words, Chris. And no, I didn't just pick these off the top of my head. :) I wrote a program that picked them from a spell check dictionary then I manaully confirmed them against the Webster dictionary.
argosy augurs augury gaps gasp gaur gory goys grapy grasp grays groups gurus guys gyros oars opus orgy ours parous pars payor pays pogy porgy posy pour pours prau pray prays proa prog pros prosy pursy rags raps rasp raspy rays ropy rosy roup ruga rugs sago saury soap soapy soar sora soup soupy sour soya spar spay sprag spray spry spur sugar sugary supra sura syrup upas urus usurp usury yaup yoga your yours |
Wow, I didn't think there were that many possibilities. That should beat the 45 words the other guy had!
|
Ohhh...let me give this to my girlfriend!! She EXCELLENT at this kind of stuff. I'll be back!!
|
Jim, check your list again because I found a couple words that broke rule #3
My g/f is working on this as we speak and I didn't show her your yet. She's really good at Boggle |
Yours, prays and pours are not plural. Pray and pour are verbs so they can't be plural, and yours is a singular pronoun that is the equivalent of your when it is not followed by a noun. e.g. "Is that your hat?" and "Is that yours?"
If these aren't the words you were referring to, please let me know which ones you are. |
Jim, I bow in your presence. Unf*ckingbelievable! Thanks everyone!!!
:) Take care, ~Chris |
jim you have intirely too much free time.......:D
smart idea though ........sneaky too :) |
Jim. I stand corrected. Your're right, for someone that received straight A's in English through highschool, I should have known that.......but hey.I've been out of school for 16yrs.
My g/f found 37 |
jim...you didnt even have to write that program...lol...there are plenty of scrabble cheating sites online...i use em when i play in yahoo! games..teehee...if youre ever doing something like this again, just type in something like "Scrabble Dictionary" into a search engine... ;)
|
It only took about 5 minutes to write the program and another 5 to verify the list. I just like a challenge.
|
For what it's worth, my g/f found 8 more words making a total of 45 words and those are from her head, no program or cheating like that. I had to tell her to stop or she would have kept going on and on(and they are all in the dictionary)
:D |
It sounds like she's definitely a keeper. :) Did she find words that aren't in my list?
|
Yeah, I compared her list to yours but she only found two more words that weren't on your list.
There were "gays" and "yaps" Hell, she found words that I've never heard of and didn't think she knew!! Like I said, she might have found all 75 but I told her it was no big deal or I would have never got her to leave the house today. |
