Need your opinion please

I may have come across a 'stang for me. Tell what you think please. IT is a 97 white GT, the guy said he has swapped in aftermarket heads and put in an exhaust system and and a chip like a "JET chip" and he wants to sell it for $11,500..I think he will let it go for $11,000 though. It also has Cobra wheels. I haven't seen it person yet, will go this afternoon, but wanted to get some opinions 1st.

BTW, he also said he works at a car chop and could get me anything I wanted at wholesale price (upto a limit) if I bought the car with cash or certified check.

Does this sound alright for a 97?

Need more info

Just give us some basics like:

- Mileage
- Ever been in a wreck?
- After you see it, overall body condition
- etc.

Check Kelly Blue Book at www.kbb.com to get an idea of the price range in your area.

Also, I would be leary to a modified Mustang. Get all the details you can from the guy so that you know exactly what was done. Why is he selling it?

It has 61,000 miles on it. The Blue Book is $9,835 or so... if he wont at least come close I dont think I will take it. The used car retail is $11,300. I am not sure if this guy is a delear or private party 'cause I just read about it in classifieds. He also said it has never been in a wreck.

Make sure to CarFax it. And have a mechanic you trust look it over.

Also, they don't make aftermarket heads for the 4.6 liter. Maybe this guy is talking about 99+ 4.6 liter heads?

That's what I was assuming. ;)

IMO $11,500 sounds a little high.

I just went and looked at it and it is VERY nice. Perfect body, no dents/dings or anything. Bright whote with DARK tinted windows. We talked a little bit and he said it was a privately owned car and he hated to part with it, but he is getting a divorce and needs the money. He also said $10,700 would be the best he could do.

I'll ask him about the heads and see what he says. Tires were about bald in the rear...so I assume it has been run pretty hard. I'm not sure what I want to do...dont wana make a mistake.

My advice is to pass it up. It's on the pricey side and it sounds like it's been beat on. Plus the 96-98's are slow as Christmas.

tireburner163 09-30-2002 10:07 PM

I stand corrected. There are the SVO heads from Ford Motorsport. I forgot about them:o

RBatson 09-30-2002 10:13 PM

Overpriced.. offer him $8k or look at www.autotrader.com and find one. Heck, you may be able to find a cobra for around that price.

Crazy Horse GT 09-30-2002 10:27 PM

it is a little pricey, i mean, you have to buy tires right off the bat, he has run it hard, you also need to drive it, driving a car slower will tell you more about it, than flooring it to high speed's. good luck. :)

Screw the blue book, the blue book is always high. You use that if 'you' are selling the car. Look at the nada value or call your bank, they will tell you what its worth. The banks and the car lots use the nada except for the real cheesy dealers that use a black book. Black book= wholesale value(if they use that ask them to black book the car they are selling... BLAH! don't waste your time, leave!)

HotRoddin 09-30-2002 11:00 PM

First off don't believe anything anyone tells you when they're selling you a used car !!!!!
Second never ever buy a used car without, like Tireburner said, doing a carfax on it !!
My son bought a bright red 97GT about 4 months ago with 36,000 miles on it (verified by carfax), for i think it was $9,400.00 so it sounds a little pricy to me too ?

Oh and every bank i know of uses Kelly Blue Book for their loans ... I work for an insurance company and its our bible ... so i don't know who told you NADA was more accurate but its not the book most institutions use?

:)

They use the nada. I wouldn't have said it if I didn't know what I was talking about. I also don't know what banks you are referring to but they use the nada here.

RBatson 09-30-2002 11:34 PM

Just thinking back.... I was 19 soooo... it was 15yrs ago I was cleaning banks at night(one of the 3 jobs I had while I was in college) and I emptied many a trash can with last month's NADA guide. Never saw a kelley blue book and none of the dealers use them around here either. You insurance guys are getting screwed.

John Sharp 09-30-2002 11:35 PM

okay, I did pass up on it. After talking to my dad, the bald tires really got me. He thought I should also pass on the deal. Bacl to the classifieds.
