Oops, im a dumb shizzle! You could be one too!
It turns out they do random checks on the schools network to see is anyone is file sharing or acting as a server through the school's bandwidth (mainly for the obvious: copyright laws). I got a letter that the desk made me sign for saying that I'm "in alleged violation of Section I.15 of the university of Florida Student Conduct Council (SCC)."
Basically I should've killed the uploading capabilities from Kazaa. :( I'm retarded. lol. At least it isn't serious unless I don't correct it. If I don't fix it within 7 days I'm subject to judicial action and they kill my ethernet. I think that's rather fair - to give me a warning or sorts. Funny thing is, I hardly even use Kazaa. So the random check got me. Duh! lol... Guess this is also a word to the wise. :) -Jonathon |
thats crappy dude, at least they gave you the warning and are giving you 7 days to fix it up.

Same thing here dude. All I did was as soon as I downloaded something I moved it to a different folder, one that isnt available by the network. Do you guys have a firewall there? We just found some tunneler thing that for 5 bucks a month lets you skip through the firewall.

Howd they log it to you? Do you have to login to your network or do they staticly assign IP's or what?

I dont know how it is at UF, but I go to Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft.Myers and if you bring your pc to the school, and have kazaa or napster or something already on it they wont work. We had one thing called songspy and it was the only one that wouldnt hit the firewall. The funny thing is, everyone has a spot on the schools network to allow people access to whatever you want. There are kids with massive porn libraries and other stuff, and they dont care. Whats up with that?

Skyler: One big giant network. Prolly a T3 serving all of us too. When I "sign-on" by turning on my computer they can log the room's port with that IP. The IP won't change until I "sign-on" again. So they can randomly pull checks to see if people are sharing files to people illegally. etc..
Notch: You got to FGCU? Geez...lol...I actually live about an hour or so north of you, i'm just going to school here...i'm up in aroun the venice area...i've heard fgcu has inredible dorms but crap classes/teachers....and songspy used to work...but now most of them are blocked...kazaa lite still works though... ;) |
Yeah I like the school alot man, the dorm are pretty sweet. Look like actual apartments. The classes are small, Im on my second semester and my biggest class has been about 40 people. Ive had some crappy teachers, but I guess youll have that anywhere. I like the school because Im only 3 hours from the keys so I can ride home whenever to do some fishing. Whats this kazaa lite al about, can you give me some info? The songspy got shut down about a week or so ago, by the same people who shut down napster. - John
