I have used LimeWire, regular Kazaa and Bear Share in the past, but I like Kazaa Lite the best

jj_jonathon 12-04-2002 11:33 PM

Kazaa Lite

...i need to be able to disable all uploading....so they dont snag me for filesharing again...lol

Hethj7 12-04-2002 11:36 PM

I use Kazaa also. I have never heard of Kazaa Lite....guess I need to check into that. Don't know much about the spyware either, although I know I basically wouldn't want it on my computer.

I wish I knew more about computers.....I seem to know more than a lot of people, but not nearly what I wish I knew.

Winmx.
Absolutely no spyware, and the interface is very Napster like, and easy to use.

Topless In Texas 12-05-2002 01:05 AM

kazaa's Here!

I use Kazaa's too...I love it ....Mom2k turned me onto it a about a year or more ago.....
BUT it does me no good now cuz ever since I reinstalled Windows '98 2nd ed. about a month or more ago, my sound crashed....so i still cant hear a damn thing!
Wish there was a QUICK FIX FOR THAT!
I dont share files though....I just take them. :)

I'm surprised no one mentioned Xolox yet. It's been the easiest to use so far, and no spyware either. Xolox was ticking people on the Gnutella network off because of the massive amount of searching/pinging it would do for a single query. ;) Oh well, I've kind of backed off of downloading stuff. I have a few reasons, the top one being that I have dial-up connection speed. That makes d/l-ing an overnight affair for MOST of the stuff I want. Fortunately, high-speed will be available in my neck o' the woods by mid June, or so they say. Anyhoo, it's no biggie for me as of right now. I've diverted my attention to DVDs and conversion processes for them. So far, I can squeeze a full length (~4.7GB) movie down to ~335MB, with decent video quality and stereo sound. :D Still have to install that DivX 5 codec, though....

Thanks for all the responses thus far, interesting to see what all is out there and who's using what. Gonna give some of these other programs a shot that you guys have listed here ;)

*LMAO* Topless I thought this was funny as hell

Kazaa Lite is the same as Kazaa except it doesnt have the spyware.

What is spyware?

Advertising companies install additional tracking software on your system, which is continuously "calling home", using your Internet connection and reports statistical data to the "mothership". While according to the privacy policies of the companies, there will be no sensitive or identifying data collected from your system and you shall remain anonymous, it still remains the fact, that you have a "live" server sitting on your PC that is sending information about you and your surfing habits to a remote location.

Ad-aware 5.83 is a program which can be found at http://www.lavasoftusa.com

What this program does is remove any spyware that you have running on your computer. If you decide to download it,it's a good idea to get Refupdate 2.01 to keep your Ad-aware reference file up to date.It checks if an updated reference file is available, downloads and installs it. This can also be found on the same page as Ad-aware.

Thanks for the explanation. That is kind of what I figured. I will download that software tomorrow and check into Kazaa Lite.

Btw, aren't cookies about doing the same thing? Maybe they are not "live", but when I visit a site, don't cookies tell that site where I have been since my last visit?

aren't cookies about doing the same thing?

A cookie's purpose is to tell the server that you returned to that web page

Just checked on LimeWire, and found 4 available, w/ T3 connections (2 PC & 2 Mac).

If you are using Windows XP, or any other version of Windows along with their newest media player, you have spyware installed, and you can't get rid of it. XP was out for 5 months before they got caught, but they were never forced to quit using it. They were just supposed to notify the licensed users that everything they downloaded, listened to, or viewed online, was being recorded on the users hard drive, and reported to a third party for MS everytime they go online. It is said to be so ingrained in the operating system that it is impossible to disable.

Take care,
~Chris

So, do I have the ability to access these files on my own hard drive? Not that I could keep them from being sent, but it might be interesting to at least view them.

OnMy3rdStang 12-05-2002 03:32 PM

Kazza Kazza KAZZAA!!!!

Almost everything I download does it at atleast 80-90K :D
And not to mention all the programs and software. I got alot of Adobe programs!

NotchJohnson 12-05-2002 06:16 PM

I have kazaa, although my subscipton to the http tunneler I have to pass through my firewall at school just expired yesterday. I didnt get too much spyware with it, but its still annoying. I used to use songspy here at school because it was the only one that would work with the firewall. It got shut down by the same people who got napster though. Bastards.

I dunno, do you have any friends at Microsoft?

;)

My understanding is that it is encrypted in such a way that only those with the key can read it, but hey, where there's a will, there's a way.

The official bottom line is that any webpage you visit that has an image, video, or audio file on it, is recorded, logged, and reported to MS.

Take care,
~Chris

I use Direct Connect and run an FTP server to share with people. I don't use them myself to download anything though. They are just too slow (some FTP's can blaze though)

Kazza is absolutlely horrible anyway. Files renamed, viruses running rampant..no thanks. I will stick to my regular channels for downloading. (and no that doesn't mean IRC either :) )

joe4speed 12-06-2002 10:49 PM

Kazaa Lite as well
