Should we be able to change user name?

I liked when this style board first came out because i was able to change my name from 84stangLX to 84LX89GT.....now that i've long since sold the LX i think it would be nice to change my name every once in a while like we used to be able to. What do you guys/gals think?

You CAN change your user name. Just talk to Dan. He should be able to help you out. It's happened a few times were someone changes there name and everything goes with them (date of joining, posts, etc.)

Nothing screws with a message board database quite as much as users changing their names. Especially when they want their post count to stay the same, and want credit on the various posts and replies they've made, etc. I've only been running a message board for a few months now, and I dread when a member asks that, but I do make exceptions. I know that Dan does too, and I'm sure if you asked him, he'd try and help you out. A little friendly advice, though; think long and hard about what you want it to be, because no webmaster enjoys getting that request over and over again from the same guy.

<--- I've sort of changed mine. I didn't want to bother Dan with what I considered to be a 'minor' change. He's got 20,000 other members to tend to and I'm sure a whole host of other projects going on just to keep MW up and running.

Too bad it isn't an easy fix whereby each user could change his/her User Name in the profile section and the software could 'link' the old name to the new in order to swap over all the current info.

No biggie for me though. :)

As a rule. being able to change names on whim is bad. boards I have been on that allow that I usually end up leaving since troublemakers change their name to hide their tracks. I know there are legit reasons (and I have had them in the past), but they should be delt with indivifdually, IMHO.

Yeah, that reminds me, when you sign up at a new site, do it BEFORE you start on that 12 pack in the fridge.

Take care,

Since I've never found the need to change mine, and if there's a way to trace them, I can't really see where the problem is? I well know that Bennyboy is 69Pony, but so what?

I like people staying the same name. Gets me all confused otherwise, I usually know most people by there Avantar. lol That messes me up when they change it. lol I sold my Mach 1, but I still keep the name, it still was my first car, my first Mustang, and my first true love. ;)

You guys have good points i didn't even think about.....i'll probably think up a good name i won't have to change again...until then, i'm still 84LX89GT :D

tireburner163 08-16-2003 02:39 AM

Anybody remember BennyBoy or Mustang Marty? lol. :D

I know Dark_5.0 changed his name, but I can't remember what it used to be.

I was pondering this recently too, I can see both sides , but tend to agree that being able to change names at will can be a bad thing. Since I got my new ride, my handle has become *somewhat* inaccurate, but its not a big enough deal to bug anyone about.

MTU 50 08-16-2003 02:19 PM

Originally I wanted my username to be MTU 5.0, but the "." would not work when I was trying to register.

So, I just went with MTU 50. I do use the 5.0 version on all of the other boards I have joined.

I had to change my name.. My old one stopped working for some reason.. Don't know if its just I hadn't been on in a while or what?? I wanted a new name but be able to keep my post count and join date..
But I couldn't even PM a Mod for help or find a email addy. :(

I guess there's nothing I can do now?? No big deal I guess. :(

Hey I remember both of those monikers. BennyBoy just grew up to become a man and so changed his name. I figured that Mustang Marty/Crazy Horse/Blackened, was just an old bastard with an identity crisis, LOL.

Fortunately, we have Odie to keep the old so-and-so in line, and to remind him who he really is.
