I'm looking to buy a truck for a daily driver, too, and thought about the Dakota R/T. But I'd rather have the 4 wheel drive, which is not available on the R/T. I would like to know how people who own any Dakotas or Rams felt about the quality and reliability of their Dodges. I plan to buy used (1998-2000 years) and am a bit wary, knowing not much about them.

I saw some good-looking R/Ts for bid on ebay.

I am also considering the Rangers and F150s. Any input is appreciated.

Sorry for hijacking your thread!:D

 i like how they look, but not overly impressed with them.i work for a recycleing division of ford, and we process all makes and types!! we get a ton of calls for 5.9 transmissions for those things, and the durango.....definatly a weak point in them!!!!!!i am not baised as far as what i drive,i just like dependability.....(i have an 02 rodeo,00spehia,the stang, and access to some cool mid 60's buick gs)the ranger edge is nice looking, and i dont get nearly as many calls for those, the s10's are nice,frontiers/e are good too,(just sold my xterra)and for the money, maybe a escape, unless you really want a pickup........but ultimatly, its your call, you are spendng the money!!!but i get the most calls for the durango and dakota trans.do you want function,or play?both?and its the trand with the 5.9 setup that is the big problem.....hope i helped.......

I worked at a dodge dealership as service manager for two years. I wouldn't touch one. They had allot of tranny, And a TON of ball joint problems. I got yelled at daily by customers who where sick and tired of putting balljoints in them. Then again I have a friend who has one and hasn't had any problems so go figgure. But I saw enough when I was service manager to not want anything to do with them.

Nice trucks...If I didnt have such a far drive to work and back I would buy one as a daily driver...

My main experience with the Ram comes from my dad's. It is a 1996, so surely they have worked out some of the problems that were present in that model year.

While the transmission hasn't needed to be replaced in it, I hate the thing. It seems to not know what gear it needs to be in half the time and then seems to have problems getting into a gear once it decides. These problems are greatly magnified when using cruise control or towing.

Something went wrong with his computer about a year ago too. It left him stranded on the road with a $400+ repair bill.

btw, I love the looks of the Dakota.
