which gears?
ive been researching and from what i hear the best bang for your buck comes from gears. i would like 3.27's or 3.55's from frpp. my 89 5.0 is mostly a daily driver with the ocassional race. if i do drive on the highway i dont want to real high rpms. right now the it just dousnt have enough grunt in the lower rpms.
thanks for any help you can give if theres a different gear you think is better then fell free to tell me. sorry its so long. |
Re: which gears?
3.27's would be a waste of money.
3.55's are ok but you will just want to go with 3.73's later. 3.73's are perfect for performance and cruising 4.10's are real good for performance but not so good for daily driving 4.30's are for the hard core. Someone also makes a 3.90 gear. I have 3.73's, I have also had 3.55's and 4.10's. IMO the 3.73's are the best all around gear. |
Re: which gears?
thanks, so im down to 3.55's or 3.73's. would like more oppinions from stangers. thanks again.

Re: which gears?
If you decide on 3.27 gears. It might be cheaper to just change out your entire rear end. There are alot of 8.8 rear ends in the junk yards and on the net with 3.27 gears for 250-300 bux.
I have a friend that did that. |
Re: which gears?
my rearend has under 115,000 just like the rest of my car, not even 1,000 on the transmission and clutch it was driven lightly its whole life before i bought. the original owner i baught it from in february left it completely stock. it was never taken past 4,000 rpm's either. :)

Re: which gears?
the new '05's GT manual tranny's are 3.55's........i'll be anxious to see how it performs with all the changes..

Re: which gears?
3.55's if you do more "commuting", 3.73 if you have a bit more time on your hands, 4.30s if you dont need a job and everythings close, lol :D

Re: which gears?
You'll get a lot of varying opinions on 3.55's or 3.73's. I had the 3.73 and loved it.

Re: which gears?
I've had 3.55's in my daily driver 5.0 for close to 10 years now. I went from 1850 RPM @ 65 mph in fifth with the original 3.08 gears to 2200 RPM @ 65 in fifth with the 3.55's. I love 'em. A noticable gain in off-the-line and thru-the-gears grunt with no problems or strain on the engine.
I just wanted a little more pulling power with my near-stock 5.0. I don't do much drag racing anymore so I don't really need the 3.73's. If you want the maximum acceleration gains possible from a differential gear change (without going to straight racing gears) the 'conventional wisdom' says 3.73's are the best gear for that. The cost of the respective gears is the same so it's your call. Good luck. |
Re: which gears?
Is it a 5 speed or automatic? if auto then go with the 3.73's and if 5 speed either 3.55's or 3.73's will be fine. eason is the 5 speed have a deeper first and second gear.

Re: which gears?
I've had 3:55's in for over 10 years, and if I had to do it over again it would be the 3:73's. I've used mine as a daily driver and quite a bit of traveling. I still think I would've liked the 3:73's.

Re: which gears?
it's a manual and the car will be transportation to school and work. could some one tell me what my rpms would be in fifth say at 60 through 80.

Re: which gears?

Re: which gears?
Mustang Brandon: I moved your other thread regarding 3.55 gears and speedometer drive gear to the Windsor Power Forum; there is a redirect here in the BOL. I'm leaving this thread here because it's received enough responses, and it looks like you've made up your mind. Good choice for your ride, IMHO.

Yeah and every chick tells you they are a virgin on the first date too. |
Re: which gears?

Re: which gears?
3.73s ...i have 3.70's in my car and i want more - dont do 3.55
|
Re: which gears?
i haven't posted a message on this sit for about five years, but i would't give up my 4.10's for any thing. iv'e got 19-20 mpg on the hwy(keeping my foot out of it). i have a forumla for fig. rpm with tire size, gear ratio that i'll try and find, but i think mine turned about 2100 at 60(factory tach probably off) with a 26" tall tire.
