Question Reloading Windows!

Well, I've finally become disgusted with the crappy performance of my computer, and recurring freezes, I have so much junk on here (18 gigs) and so many worthless programs I've decided to reinstall Win98. I also have WinME as well. I've been backing up all those useful programs and files and pics ( ) that I've accumulated over the years tonight. My question is: I forgot how to format the Hard disk. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Should I stick to Win98 or WinME?

Angry I'm the LAST person to say!!!

i hate computers....my pc crashed a few months ago trying to download ME and some camera software. After having it 'fixed' (yeah, right. All they did was LOSE all my pics and everything i had stored and not backed up, about 300 of my favorite pics!!!)
Ive still got the same freezing problems.... it freezes up at LEAST a 1/2 dozen times a day!!!! (thats w/in a few hours when i'm home!!) I ALWAYS GET THE SAME ERROR MESSAGES.. the damn 'tryclnt' whatever that is. And now my pc is telling me I've only got about 35% of memory left!!!!!!! Which is Bull****. I cant scan ANYTHING and IM at the same time cause it slllloooowwwsss down and then locks up!
VERY FRUSTRATING....I really did not want to fork out the bucks now to buy a new PC cause i'm about to move into my house, but I've had it!!!!
I've heard neg. things about ME...I still have the disk but am scared to download it cause i dont wanna crash again....And I guess, NOW would be a good time to learn how to BACKUP MY STUFF IN MY PC...I have never done that. My main concern is my pics.
I know I"m not helping you any...just want to let you know that i hate my pc as much as you hate yours...if thats any comfort to you!!!!!!! YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

fdisk & format

I know you all hate Macs, although I don't know why (envy maybe?), but you shouldn't. They are your friend. They are the fastest personal computer on the market, have the best graphics, are always breaking new ground first, and are the easiest to navigate. Their new Unix platform OS X 10.1 is the most stable operating system there is. I really think you might want to check this out, if you havn't seen it already. It's a page for Windows users.

Keep an open mind, and you will only get better. Keep it closed, and you're through.

Take care,
-Chris

Gee I think we all know who voted for the MAC!

Joe, having used Win 98 and hating I can honestly say that you need to move up. Go with XP or Win 2k... they rock and they are VERY stable. I have only had XP crash on me once.

I have ummm copies. Send me a PM.

computers and networking is my job. I work with NT, 95, 98, 2000, and have messed with XP a little bit. Outside of work, I constantly fix friends and relative's PC's. They usually have ME, or 98. Personally I use 98SE on my home PC. As far as which one is better for you, well that depends on what exactly you use your computer for the most. Gaming, internet, etc. Different OS's will handle different tasks better than others. As far as the question of ME or 98, I say go with 98SE. I must admit that XP does seem to be a great OS, but I really haven't messed with it enough to develop a serious opinion about it yet. Just my $.02

Hehehe, you just keep on telling yourself that!

Joe-
Thanks. I knew it was there for me. I thought that was pretty funny. I only know of two other part time members here who have a Mac, but we're only 5% of the market (including the President), so far.

Did you go to that link I left above? If not, you should.

Pretty much says it all right there.

I'm sorry, but you guys just make it too easy.

Good luck, Joe.

WinME sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate it. It is slow as hell especially when i have a 1.3ghz computer! I have heard XP is very good and we are getting it soon. My friend uses both Mac and PC. he uses the Mac for running a server and for graphics and stuff. He uses the PC for games and normal stuff. PC's are much better for games but MACs are good too IMO. I dont really care for the MAC operating systems of a couple years ago but you probably just have to get used to it.

I still like 2000. It is a pretty darn stable platform. The only thing that freezes it are a few bugs in a beta version of a game I've got, and that only happens very rarely. I don't know about ME, but it's pretty much the same as 98, and I'm leary of XP. A friend is running it and likes it pretty well. I just don't want some program sending Microsoft a list of all my, uh...not pirated...legitimate...perfectly legally obtained programs...yeah .

I have ME and wouldn't recommend it...I freeze or crash on a regular basis, I am thinking of upgrading too, so let me know how it goes if you use XP!!! Good luck.

Joe is that the 750mhz Duron I sold you?

I can't remember if it has 128 or 256meg of ram. Go with 256 with windows XP.

Either Scott (rebel) or I can get it to you .

But XP is WAYY better than 98, and it won't lock up at all anymore.

So format it FULLY
do an Fdisk /MBR

if you need help gimme a call and I'll be happy to help ya out.

Some older games and programs will not run on XP, say like Command and Conquer Red Alert. I've personally experienced WinME and Win98 SE. Between the two, I had less problems with SE, but I like WinME a lot as well. Dispite the problems, downloading a patch generally takes care of the issue, and it's been a very stable O/S for me anyway. Several days of running straight while online, most programs load and run VERY fast, and the actual loading is super fast as well.

Most people have pretty bad experiences with ME.

Hey Sky... this is the Pent III 750 mhz that I am reloading. There's just too much crap on it to work right anymore! I can say that I've been really happy with it, I've put it through hell, but I'm ready for an upgrade! It has 384 megs ram so it should all be well! I'll let ya know if I need any help.... Scott is helping me with XP so I appreciate all your help and the offer!

yeah you can upgrade that motherboard by putting a faster CPU in it.

I sold you a Duron 750MHZ.

I would recommend you go with a Athlon 1400 or Athlon XP 1700.

You could get a faster video card if you do gaming too...

If you wanted to spend more, you could go with a DDR Motherboard, also you could get a faster ATA133 7200rpm HDD now which new motherboards support.

Theres lots of options, just depends how much you wanna do.

AMD 1700 xp
new 40 gb 7200 RPM HDD
256 DDR ram
msi kt266 pro r motherboard

I upgraded from a p2 350 with the above for 350 bucks! gotta love how low prices are right now!

Sky:
My main computer that I use solely is the Pentium. I have had it a few years, I bought it from Gateway. The comp. I bought from you, I bought so my roommate and everyone can use. I have had roommates for a long time, and know that I don't want a bunch of people using my computer, that's why I bought another one from you! It's a great computer, but I put Win ME on it!! (my bad! ) So I will probably put XP on that one as well! Rebel (Scott) is helping me with that so I will keep ya posted!

Yeah, just wanted to make sure it was still running right.

Yeah Ed, it is a lot cheaper, but SDRAM really has jumped in price recently!
