Reusable air filters
We've all heard of the reusable air filters that use cotton saturated with oil. But has anyone heard of a reusable air filter that doesn't need oiling, just clean and dry?

Re: Reusable air filters
Not to my knowledge.
As the 'permanent' K&N-type filters cost around $50. and the re-oiling kits a bit less than $10. in most places, I don't see the point in replacing stock paper filters every 10,000 miles, at around $10. a pop, when you can get better 'performance' from the K&N and, if you keep it long enough, save a few bucks. However, to each his own. |
Re: Reusable air filters
100% agreed. You can buy the cone filters for cold air tubes but they have to be changed as well and are around $30 a piece or more. They usually lasted my wife and I about a year a piece... but I'd knock it out on the ground every now and then.

Re: Reusable air filters
There may be others as good as the K&N, but for my $$$, I'll just stick with the originals and clean and reoil as needed.

Re: Reusable air filters
In my application I use a round air cleaner. I tried a cone and tube but found that I got the air was hotter because the tube ran close to the header and no room to run it anywhere else, so back to the round. I also tried K&N but no matter how little oil I used (less than directions call for) on the filter it got sucked down into the intake system. In my search for reusable filters that have performance in mind I've found cotton gauze, and woven, and foam. The foam doesn't use oil but doesn't seem like a very good filter medium. I have heard of a K&N type filter that's washable, reusable but doesn't need oil, just can't remember who or where. Or maybe I'm dreaming about car stuff too much.

Re: Reusable air filters
I think the main things to consider with the K&N filters is the area used in the filtration area and where the inlet for the air intake is located. We want maximum filtrtation area and minimum temperature for the incoming air. Routing for the incoming air should not really be a problem.
