Post Oh, this is a good one!

I am a frequent on 3.8 mustang, and i am new to this forum. Anyway, i got pretty heated when i heard someone say that the 3.8L v6 '99 and up could beat a 5.0! I own a v6 and know this cant be true. Mine is a 95 with some good mods and can hang with a 4.6 but can not over take it. As a six owner i am totally shocked that this guy is trying to state that a stock v6 can take a five0! It makes that site look so bad. Can someone please go and educate this man on what 5.0 can do. UUUUHHHHH!!!! Now i know why the 5.0 guys talk the trash they do about the v6 owners. When will it end. Have a good one guys/gals.

I'd say that a '99+ base 3.8L 5 speed could almost hang with an automatic convertible 5.0L....but not really. This guy is probably trying to justify the fact he doesn't have a 5.0L rather than accepting it's a 3.8L. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with owning a 3.8L but maybe he feels "insecure" or whatever. At least you understand it's limitations.

That isjust like a guy on a street racing site i go too. He has a 13sec civic or something and claims he has never lost to a Mustang. It is like give me a break. It is really funny what ppl think is a fast car. I agree that he is trying to make himself feel better for have a 3.8L.

It's possible that a new V6 5 speed could beat a 5.0 auto with tall gears. MM&FF ran 14.9 bone stock.

Ya, a NEW v6 might be able to take a 5 liter auto convert. with 2.73 gears. The first gen 4.6l (96-98) have less power than the second (99+) which is why you can stay with them, but hanging with a car and beating it is a lot different. A stock manual hardtop 5 liter (87-93) runs low-mid 14s in the 1/4 mile, a new gt does it in just about 14 flat.

You seem to be a fine person, but your right, that a lot of the v6 guys think that they can take anything but a new gt, they especially think that the 5.0 is a slug.

my '89 gt runs 14.4's in 1/4 mile, spinning first and second hard out the hole. i have beaten newer cobras, and some other mustangs with mild work done to there cars at the track with my stock gt, ok well i can't say stock the only thing that i have done is 3.73's, thats it! i don't know about the new gt's running flat 14's though.
i don't have nothing against v6's either. if you want to make your car faster more power to you.

My ex girlfriend has a V-6 Mustang and I think it's pretty quick, Much better than those p.o.s. 4 cyls they had! Her V-6 would roast 1st and get some good second gear.. not bad!

i don't know, maybe a 3.8 could beat a 5.0 if they were racing on a real windy road.in a strait line ...no but i imagine that a 3.8 is lighter and handles better and if you got on a real windy, hard to drive road then a 3.8 if driven by a better driver could take a 5.0.......i know this is hard to believe but i took a 5.0 once in my 4 banger capri.it was a real windy road going down a mountian.if you take an early fox(a real light 4cylinder)and put some 60s on it with good tires they will really take some corners.it helped that i'm a luitic, and we were going down a mountian.but i did flat out lose this guy i worked with that had a moded 5.0. i have given thought to taking a 2.8 and putting it in a fox with some boost.the 2.8 is a really light moter and if i could get it to make some power then it would trully be a import eater.i think a fox with the same wieght as the 4 cyl is allmost un touchable in corners its just hard to make dependable power with that weight.the 3.8 is lighter than the 5.0 (i would assume) so if you could biuld it to have some power than it would be a neet car that could take a 5.0 if the road was windy enough.

Thumbs up

Stock for stock maybe close.

Say a 00 or 01 V6 man vs. a 84-88 5.0L atx vert.

It's not beyond some truth ... considering the gearing.

Damn don't get so defensive we're talking about some 15 years in tech difference.

sorry,if i'm who you meant, didn't maen to be defensive.its just that in Pa. there are alot of windy back country roads to play on so i kinda like the idea of a lite wieght fox powered by a 6.if they only had the power of a v8 without spending an arm and a leg on them.....sigh.....till i get rich the v8 will do the trick for me

An '00 v6 Mustang puts out about the same horsepower as an 88-93 Mustang 5.0. How much more does the '00 body weigh, though? I know the sn95s were bricks. Did they lighten the new body style much?

Just to clear some things up. My lastest 5.0 mag has a guy that has modified his 00, or 01 V6 5-speed stang and completely stock he ran a 15.8. He now runs like low 13's in it, and is shooting for 12's, with the addition of a blower. Which I mean I guess you could come back and say "well put a blower on a 5.0 then!" I'm not comparing it, I'm just saying he almost runs 12's, so it could happen.

Well, with the tire and jack removed, iced intake, and a few runs MM & FF did manage a 14.97 out of a stock 99 V-6.

That being said, the new V-6's still weigh more than the Fox 5.0's, and they are 35hp short. Driven properly a stock 87-93 GT should be in the low/mid 14's. Equal drivers the V-6 loses bad, but a lot of races are decided on the better driver.

The new V-6's go pretty decent, according to MM&FF the V-6 was actually easier to get into the 14's than the last 4.6L GT they tested. That's pretty sad.
