shift kit
I'm new to this group. My name is Brandon Brown and I live in Kennesaw GA. I have an 89 lx 5.0 with a cold air intake, off-road h-pipe, one chamber flomasters, underdrive pulleys, and a 3.73 gear. I've been looking at shift kits lately and I had my eye on the transpak shift kit by b&m. I wanted to know if this is a good kit for the AOD, or is there something better out there. I dont want to spend more than $100. Thanks.

Around here B&M has a reputation of making pretty crappy shift kits. I have a B&M Street/Strip shift kit in my car, it costs less than $30 out of Summit/Jegs. I love it! The shifts are WAY crisper! There is a huge difference! I think the most popular I've heard of is the TransGo. It is quite a bit more expensive though. I'm not exactly sure of the price....

i believe the trans-go is about $100 from summit. i would go with that one, theres 3 settings to choose from and i think the B&M only has one setting.

The B&M Transpak has three settings. The regular kit has 2: RV/Heavy Duty and Street/Strip. Then there is a separate Competition kit. The Transpak combines all three I believe.

DO NOT GET THE B&M KIT. It fried the trans in my brother's old 89 GT(in 4 days). The B&M kit is a cheap kit that only throws in a few things to raise the line pressure and make it shift harder. It is hard on the clutches. If you want a good shift kit go with a TRANS-GO shift kit, it includes everything need to do the job RIGHT. It is like $123.00, in Summit. But it is WELL worth it, compared to B&M. Which do you think will cost less, buying a quality kit, or buying a cheap kit and then having to rebuild your AOD.

I ran the B&M transpak with a hole shot converter for years and I liked it. It is better than stock. My ex-girl complained that it shifted too hard, my mom liked it though.
Its nowhere near as good as a lentech but... it doesn't cost as much as a lentech either. |

There is a good chance your brothers problem was the fact that the tranny wasn't maintained properly. I've was told "Either change the tranny fluid regularly or DON'T change it at all". |

My brother always maintainded things very well.
But who ever owned my car before me didn't change it and the fluid it light brown. Should I change it or not. I think leaving it in would do more harm than good.

Auto trannies are a mystical, magical thing.. if you find a good tranny guy, try not to upset him. My tranny guy has been building trannies since he was a teenager. I told him I'll tell everyone what a good job he did on my car, his remark "I will only work on YOUR car". He will not work on any performance aod mustang except mine, too much of a headache.
He explained to me once that residue builds up in a tranny if it isn't maintained regularly. If you change the fluid later then it loosens the residue and build up and clogs causing the tranny to burn up(due to the heat I assume). So I would say changing the fluid would be worse than not at this point. Good luck with it.. |

well my car has about 90,000 miles on it and I don't know if the fluid has been changed before, but it needs changing now. I'm gonna ask my mechanic about it. There must be some type of flush I can use. I prob. gonna be perinoid either way. I'm glad I found this out, I was gonna change the fluid this week-end.
