I've been standing around one for 14 years. The only time I've seen someone cutting a box open is when it was possibly damaged, needed to be repacked or was suspious. Believe it or not, people actually ship stuff(lets say anti-freeze) with the lid not screwed on tight and it leaks... and leaks... soaks the package and gets on other packages. There is a team that has to handle it like its a hazardous material(even if its maple syrup) because its an unknown substance until its 'investigated'. I actually had barbeque sauce leak in my truck before, smelt good but I doubt the customer that got it on thier lands end package thought much of it. Then there is the package that got soaked with ATF fluid because someone shipped a tranny with fluid in it. The contents may be ok, but it needs to be repacked. Loose heads for a Semi in a box with a 30# limit? Maybe it was a hub and they were checking the suspicious packages or maybe the high valued packages to verify there is actually something in the box. We are way too busy to just randomly open boxes and its really not worth losing your job over.

Please don't take me the wrong way, I just felt I needed to give you an idea of what goes on. After all, UPS has been putting a roof over my head and parts on my mustang for a long time..
