I would recommend the
Valentine One radar dectector; it has sensors for both front and rear-facing radar.

Mike Valentine puts his name on it and that also impresses me but no, I don't own this dectector - yet.
You can try to beat the 'photocops' (photo radar) with a license plate cover that makes your plate reflective (and unreadable) to photo radar.
No guarantees as how this actually works but worth as try if you have $40. to spare (per plate).

Outside of detectors, the only sensible thing you can do is be alert, watch the rear-view a lot, don't speed - much less race - on roads you don't know well and don't weave in and out of traffic, making yourself a target. At 'stoplight races', if you win or lose, don't take it up past 70 mph or so unless you're on a highway - for obvious reasons.
