Default California License plate?

The other day I came across the plate that came w/ my 66. Its black w/ yellow letters. The previous owner had never registered the car, so it was the plate that came from Ca on the car.
Anyway, I noticed that the plate had the number 63 stamped in the corner where the year goes.
This got me thinking , and on the Ca DMV site it notes:
Basic information on 1963- present plates:

* 1963 was the last year a complete new plate issuance to all vehicles occured (the plates had a black background and chrome yellow characters).

So from what I've read so far it looks like the original plate might have stayed with the car since it was new! Either that, or someone who had their plate issued in 63 had it transferred onto the car in the past?

What do you think? Could this be worth something, if for no other reason than historical value?
Anyone know a cheap way to track down the history of a plate? (You actually buy your plate in Ca, and just pay to get it re-upped, correct? So the plate is "attached" to the driver more than the car?)
Anyway, sorry bout the length , just interested in finding out anything I can
Jorge
