That price does seem a little high. It is pretty easy to get more power out of those cars though. They still have the pushrod 5.0, which has a huge aftermarket serving it. If you would find a newer one, 96-up, they have the new modular motors. They also can be very fast, but just cost a little more to get there right now since the technology is newer.
As far as where to start, I would get a set of gears for the car. No power increase, but they greatly improve acceleration.
Then you can bump the timing up, remove the air silencer, add underdrive pulleys, cold air intake,...the list goes on and on. If you do get the car let us know. Many guys on this board can put you in the right direction.
