It's not that you NEED them. They are just convenient. You don't NEED A/C, or power windows, power locks, power steering, or power brakes. They are just options.

North Dakota doesn't salt for **** . I really doubt Nebraska salt's for **** . Sand is used way more there. Ohio, I would be willing to bet breaks out the salt truck from time to time, but nothing like Chicago, or the Twin Cities.

I've lived here for 24 years, and trust me. At LEAST once every couple days I HAVE to clean my headlights to see the glow when they've been salting. Especially when it's real wet out. It helps to do it 2x a day.
