In 68 Fords 429 Thunder Jet and the 460 were taking over. The thin wall casting of the 385 took over the older Y-design thick FE blocks.
Early 429/460 motors had big valves. Not until 1970 did canted valves show up.
The 1970 429CJ hit the street,Torino/Cyclone/Fairlane with massive ports. 1971 for the Stang. These heads were overkill for the street. They flow great at about 190 MPH. Low end torque suffered.
The Mustangs 429CJ in 71 was increased with a step up to the 429SCJ. 780 Holley,Mech cam w/more lift/duration,locker or Traction Loc rear.
My opinion is that the 385 series never really got the chance the FE had. The EPA killed any performance after these motors just got started.
