Talking I bought a Mustang

I'm new here and turned 16 a month ago and bought a 1990 Mustang about week and a half ago. The body and interior were really good, but we found out Thursday I would have to put a new engine in it It is only a 4 cylinder because my parents insurance company will not insure me on a V-8. So we shipped it over to my uncle (he is a desiel mechanic) who will rebuild it for us. Anybody know the horse power the 2.3L will have? but for know I will get to drive my dad's 1967 Mustang w/ a 289 and a 4 speed every now and then

Hmmm...

A lot of insurance companies base their insurance on the original engine that came in the car... A friend swapped a 5.0 into a 86 Volvo without pentalty...

Ya, have you uncle swap in a real engine, fast. If not that, then get a 100lb bottle of nitrous, 150 shot, and run it all the time. Then it might feel ok.

I think your parents BS'd you on the insurance thing. Thats completely not true. I got my stang at 17, no difference. And its been the cheapest insurance I've ever paid! 1990 BMW 325i, and 1994 Integra LS. Those two were way higher! Wont insure you? Thats such crap. I pay $175

I think Stang SVOs were produced from 1984 until 1986. The 86' had 205-210hp from a turbo 4-cylinder. That's the engine you want.

Yeah, Skyman's right. they will insure you, but it'll be more than if you got a volvo. take out the 4 cyl. and replace it with a V8, or the SVO turbo. Dinomite's idea of a 150 shot running constantly would work too. but you'd have to get a new motor, say, once a month. i'd say you got gipped out of real power though.

Jack, talk your uncle into throwing in a 5.0 302 motor. You know sometime soon you'll be waiting at a redlight and an import or maybe a LT1 Camaro will roll up next to you. He'll throw you a couple of revs and then what are you gonna do? Wish that 2.3 could turn into a 5.0? You can't back down from a street fight. The 5.0 will give you a knockout punch that they'll feel for weeks. The 5.0 is the only answer. Maybe you should throw in a 351. You know....

I would put in a better engine or a turbo but there is one major factor, i have no money, in fact i owe my dad 700 bucks still for the car and on top of that the engine rebuild. so for now its just gonna have to be slow . and for the insurance, Pemco (parents insurance) wont even give me a quote, my brother when he was 16 had them search for someone who would insure him and the only ones who would charged way to much (this is all for full coverage too). Thats what sucks about living in the pacific northwest of Washington. But when I do have money I will get an 85 turbo (the year they had 205 hp) and install it, but until then I'll enjoy the mpg.

Dude I have had my 5.0 since I was 13! I insured it when I was 15 1/2. I'm 16 now and have no probs. with insurance, it's just high! You can get a qoute but it will probably be high, try a diff. company.

Hey, boys, lets lay off Jack a little . Money is tight for these sort of things at 16 and at least he has a stang right? He knows he needs more power and can address that later, but until then he has the right attitude...."enjoy the MPG". With the money he saves in gas, he can start saving his funds for power. Congrats on the new car Jack !

Your in good hands with allstate hehe, shopping around on insurance rates is the only way. Unless you have a bad driving record, no insurance company will refuse to insure you. The turbo idea sounds like the best way to go. Yeah most insurance companies only go by the original engine. I little tricky dickyness may be in order.

thanks Hethj7, and the sad part is I have to pay 104$ a month for liability and comprehensive, so I dont even have full coverage and I still pay over 100$ a month. And I owe my dad 700$ for the rest of the car and then the money for the new engine so I am pretty broke right now anyways so I need to say a little money on gas.
