Tonight's top story on the news featured a tragic street race that left a 44y.o man dead. Apparently, a nissan 300zx was racing another car (who fled) when the Z struck a man riding his bike to work. The speed is estimated at 100 and the man was killed instantly. The amount of damage done to the car was incredible, even the sherrif being interviewed was teary eyed. Also, they showed the Z owner being taken away in police custody, and being charged with vehicular manslaughter. Guy'll probably spend the rest of his life in jail.

Also, the only funny part was when the cop described the other car they were looking for. He said, "We're looking for the driver of a Black Honda Civic. It has tinted windows, chrome rims, and a modified exhuast system." Then the cop said of the civic driver, "You're not a suspect, we just want to talk to you about what happened." Yeah right, this guy better hide out for a while. "Not a suspect," give me a break. This guy was participating in an ILLEGAL street race, in which a man was killed, then FLED THE SCENE. I'm sure the cops just want to talk...


Please, be careful out there guys. You can be the safest driver in the world, but all it takes is one stupid decision, and your life could be over. Thanks for reading.

Sad news and why I do little street racing and am very selective about where and when I do even that.

You can rev at me all day in your ricer, Camaro or whatever and you won't get a race unless I know the road, it's empty and there are no driveways, alleys or other places where someone could innocently pull out in front of us while we're doing 80, 90 or 100 mph. No thanks. I had a few 'close one's' and got smart before I got killed or ruined my life by killing someone else.

I still street race, but only when I feel comfortable doing it and that isn't often. It's risky and mostly just not worth it to 'show' some stranger you'll never see again that you can beat him.

This kind of tragic death - for nothing - once again proves the point. You do something like this - kill a guy on a bike - while street racing, which is legally indefensible - you're toast and you can kiss all your big life plans goodbye. Even if you get away, you'll have the heavy guilt on your shoulders and be looking over them for the rest of your life. No thanks. I'll race you at the track.

See, there's another reason why I don't go to these street races... I haven't been to one in over a year. My prayers go out to the dude on the bike.

I hear ya tireburner. I dont know what is wrong with the majority of uor generation. I have no clue where the whole rice movement and irresponsible driving came from. Luckily i did not follow in these footsteps nor did many of my friends.

I hope this rice thing is just a fad that will just fade away. I think what mainly pisses me off about the rice movement is the extreme lack of basic knowledge that these people have. Most of them are too ignorant to learn about cars too, they just think whatever that rice magazine says is true

Very Tragic. But I wonder if they'll find the kid. I mean if some one asked me if I saw a black civic with tinted windows, chrome rims, and a modified exhuast system, I would have to say yes, about 4 of them in the last 10 minutes. They all drove like morons.

This guy won't spend the rest of his life in jail. What is the maximum sentence for manslaughter, 12 years? The problem is, I bet the dumb who was in the honda probably was way behind (getting his a** handed to him) and saw the whole thing happen and will go home and talk about how he beat a 300Z. He'll most likely not realize the impact he's had on many people's lives!.

But so is the ricer tradition....

What road was this on? Highway? Side street? Speed limit there? Was there a bike path next to the road? What time of day was it? If it was night did the bike rider have headlights and a taillight? Did he have proper reflectors?

Or is the dead guy just one of a 100 morons I see a year biking down a road that has a 50mph speed limit, at night without proper lighting, with a bike path right next to it that he has decided to ignore? If that's the case, it could have easily been any of us doing 50mph down a dark street when a bike appears just about out of nowhere because the idiot isn't riding on the bike path that was built for his/her stupid ***.

It may just be me, but there are well over 20mi of specialized, paved bike trails within 10mi of my house and there are seemingly more and more idiots out there who have decided to ignore the bike trail right next to them and ride on a road with a gravel shoulder, at dusk or later, and you usually have to slow way down because you can't pass them with oncoming traffic in the other lane. Those bikers are just asking to get killed, and I don't really appreciate them being so damn stupid.

Point taken regarding stupid and careless bikers but these ricer guys were supposedly doing 100 mph, which is indefensible - on any road.

Blaming the biker for (possibly) being in the wrong place may be valid but the high speeds and the fact that they were racing cancels out any minor culpability on the biker's part.

In any case, the biker is quite dead, which makes any traffic infractions he may have been guilty of, invalid.

Vehicular homicide can be punishable by up to 20 years in my state and recent cases here (drunk driver crashed at 90 mph, killed three teenage passengers in his car) saw 10 years minimum sentence, no parole. Not fun.

That is so sad....my heart goes out to the biker, who has a right to ride his bike, where as the drivers have no right to drive on any road doing 100 unless its on a controlled track...Odie

The biker, dead or not, could be partly culpable for the accident. Street racing probably will skew the the fault towards the racers.

There was a recent article , I think in Chicago, which chronicled the citation of of a dead person who died in a one car accident. There were several citations against the corpse. the police said those were necessary in order to document things for future civil litigation.

My prayers go with the family and friends of the dead biker. And no tireburner i am a responsible teenager... a rare type i think, all my ricer friends are dumbys, i have seen ricers race infront of cops. That is too bad.

srv1, here's the problem. We have no idea what the kid actually did.

Estimated speed = 100mph. What if he was doing 85mph on a 70mph road? No knowledge of road conditions, time of day, type of road, etc.

From the description it gives, I could guesstimate the scenerio. Major city (riding bike to work), dawn to daylight (going to work and a detailed description of the other car was given), on what was probably not a highway (not too many of those a non-psycho would use in a city). That would lead me to believe the speed limit was probably between 30-40mph.

In that case, not only should the 300ZX driver have seen the biker, but he shouldn't have been doing street racing.

On the other hand, if it was a road like Co Rd 121 near my house where there is a 55mph speed limit on a little used road with a 6" paved/3ft gravel shoulder, and this happened at night, I can't fault the racer. He might not have known the biker was there until he was right on top of him. The same would go for anybody doing the speed limit as well.

I'm reluctant to dish out punishment before I have a good idea what truely happened. Especially when I have street raced on empty major freeways to 100mph.
