Good thing I checked back! It is NOT PRESSED! If you are trying to remove your old one, you need to heat up the case with a propane torch. Tap on the pinion as you go, but it should really just fall out after you heat it up.

Take care,
-Chris

O.K., thanks. Now the next ? is... If the outside housing has a crack in it, do I have to replace it or can it be welded back to close the crack?

I know nothing about a quick-change. I'm used to working with a 8 3/4 so they are too different. I know the principal is the same but...it throws me off a little.

We got the new (to us) racecar on Saturday. Doesn't give us much time to get it pulled apart and put back. I keep finding things wrong with the car, so it's a good thing we decided to tear it apart, first.
Of course I would never put it on the track without going thru it first. That would be ULTIMATE STUPID.

The deeper we get into it, the worse it is. If I would have seen the car before he bought it, he would have never bought it.

If you've got a good enough welder, anything is possible. You need to ask your spark man about welding the case. Where is it cracked? Oh man, you didn't try and use a press on the pinion, did you?

Questions:

What make and year frame?

Engine?

Injection?

How many sets of quick change gears came with it?

Which sets?

What size track do you run?

I can help you out, little girl.

Take care,
-Chris

hey you... Just got to work and threw my ads on , now i can play..hehe
OK here goes
1. the frame is a tomasik chassis built 5 years ago

2.383

3.holley 750 - tricked out

4. 1

5.haven't figured the gear ratio yet

6. 1/5 mile...very short

no we did no welding or heating up of anything. It had some kind of blue goopy crap on one spot on the casing. I cleaned it off and it was trying to conceal a crack about 2 in. long. running sideways across the casing. oh yeah, it runs across a fin thingy. Does that make a difference?

And one more thing...I AM BEYOND HELP!!!!!

Morning. i'm getting ready to grab some breakfast and spend the day on the car.

I may not be that much help afterall. I've never heard of a 383 in a sprint before, and although I know carbs excellent, my sprint experience is with a set of hillborns. I'll tell you what the gears are if you'll tell me the numbers that are stamped on them (I'm heading out in about a half hour (7:30am))

1/5th mile...perfect below is our 1/5 mile track, from the pit crew stands, last summer.

Okay, let's make sure we understand each other. Does this car have a Winters quick change rear? the kind with a plate on the back, and two gears that go inside the plate? Look at the new pics of our car on my website Click here. Does the rear end look like that? If so, there should be two gears that pop in the back. One is bigger than the other. If they don't each have a number stamped into them, then count the teeth on each and let me know.

Take care,
-Chris

The girls here at the shop have been given a 87 mustang, and we are gonna put a boss302 engine in it.

Congrats on the new project. Just as a side note on the old one, understanding those Winters rear ends is important. They have one of two "permenant" ring and pinion sets. 99% of the time it's a 4.86:1 set. Then you have two more gears for the quick change. Determining your final ratio involves the number of teeth on both smaller gears, and the ring and pinion. It gets complicated, but I have a chart if you need some help. To complicate matters further, the quick change gears can be installed either way, meaning the big gear can go on top, and the little one on the bottom, or vice-versa. ***Very important that you know this***: With the big gear on top, you get a much lower, short track set up. With the big gear on the bottom, you get a higher gear ratio designed for larger tracks, of 1/2 mile in length or more. If you screw up, you'll hear about it from the driver after the first lap .

Take care,
-Chris
