I work at a ford dealership and i can tell you several reasons why I personally would rather have a cobra.
The Cobra is designed to production quality and as such has a decent warranty and is easier and less expensive for someone to diagnose. This is because the SVT PCM is designed for the car rather than Roush which has chips that alter the factory programming and as such voids the actual ford warranty (Ford issued a memo that ANY vehicle containing an aftermarket chip voids the ford warranty). A chip is also VERY easily detected because if someone has to hook up a scan tool, the vehicle shows up as an australian/european car (forget why they do it, but i think it's because other countries have less stringent emissions so it's easier to alter the programming). So in other words, you have to have a Roush warranty. From personal experience with a drivability concern on a Roush F150, it takes FOREVER for Roush to re-imburse the dealership for the money, which makes them much less likely to work on it. Plus only Roush dealers are usually willing to work on the vehicle whereas non-roush dealers would probably make you pay for repairs out of your pocket or they wouldn't work on it at all in the first place. The Roush has a cheesy body kit that is easy to scrape into things and basically all you get is a GT with ground effects, side exhaust, and a supercharger with related engine management items. The Roush air filter and housing are cheesy at best as well and their "electrostatic welding" of the air box isn't very good (they call it electrostatic welding....i call it cheap glue). The Cobra also brings the name and good handling in a very daily drivable package as well as good emissions, whereas the Roush rides rough and for the money isn't all that great (in my opinion). This is what i think...i'm sure there will be differing opinions though

Do you feel the same about Saleen? I had the impression that Saleen was more closely affliated with Ford. |

HAHAHAHAHA Roush Stage 3 for $30k???? You gotta be kidding! Base price of a Gt is abour $24k and the Stage 2 along is a $9k package without the usual 3-4k dealer markup. So for a Stage 2 you are looking at a minumum of $36k. Add about 5k on top of that for a Stage 3. Its really not worth it in my opinion, plus SVT's have more value.

From talking to a guy at my local dealership, Saleen is not much better. He said that they have stopped carrying them because of some warranty issues that Saleen would not honor and also because they insisted that they keep 10 Saleens in stock at all times.
To tell you the truth I am not very happy with Saleen either. It took over $1600 worth of prep work to smooth out my body kit so that it looked decent. Not what I was expecting from a kit that costs $1600 to begin with! Also, I ordered a rear tower bar from them when they were on sale for cheap and it turns out it is a *******' 30lb steel tube that is flat at the ends and you have to drill holes in the side of your towers and shim it with washers to make it bride the gap properly....

Rousch stage 3 for 29-30K??? Maybe in Texas. The local authorized Rousch dealership has had a 2001 stage ONE convertible on thier floor for about 8 months now. They are asking FORTY TWO FREAKIN THOUSAND DOLLARS for it. I took one look at it and when I stopped laughing gently reminded them that I could buy a Cobra for less and blow the doors off the thing. You should have heard all the hemming and hawing and blah, blah, blah. What a joke.

$18,000 for a new GT? That's funny...Ford says $17,800 for a base V6, and $23,360 for a base GT.

Yes MM+FF testede it not too long ago and they said it is like 50k I would rather have a Cobra or an older Saleen. I dont truly care for the new saleen body kits. The '95 S351 is the best looking Saleen ever IMO.

Roush v. Cobra
Has anyone here ever driven a Roush or Saleen....The difference between one of these cars and a Cobra is stark. The Roush and Saleen are built to handle. They are true sports cars with Cobra horsepower and torque. A Cobra and a stock Mustang handle on corners much like a pickup truck. Everyone here go to the dealer and drive a Roush. A Stage 3 Roush and the Saleen equilivent is approximately $50 thousand but well worth it. It is a drivers car.

Last summer a dealership actually let me drive a blown Saleen S351 convertible and it was outstanding. They let me drive it because A. my 92 GT is pristine and a bunch of salesmen asked me if I wanted to sell it, and B. the Saleen had been on thier floor for awhile. Needless to say, I drove it hard. We got on the freeway and I hammered it from the ramp light up to about 120 and pushed it into a long sweeping curve. It was like a slot car. The best part was when we returned to the lot. The salesman who was with me (appeared to be about 19 and didn't really know squat about the car) exclaimed "whoa dude, I've never seen the boost gauge move before!" Very cool but, unfortunately I had 46,000 reasons not to buy it.

"The Roush and Saleen are street legal race cars, while the Cobra and GT are good handling, high performance production cars." No offense, but for 1/2 the additional cost of a Roush or Saleen, a new GT, or Cobra for that matter, could be made to run circles around them. |

I don't like all the ground affects. That is why I got the LX in 1988 instead of the GT.
If I had my choice, and I do, I would get the Cobra in a heartbeat. Ya know what, I just might trade in the 97. Anyone wanna buy a 97 Vert with 25k on it? lol. Hmmm, maybe I'll just put the Eaton roots blower on it....
