The Race

Who’s this that dare abide beside me? My eyes glance quickly over my would-be opponent, my mind silently reciting “68, Camaro, 327.” Nothing to worry about. The red machine, torques to one side as it releases a long hard rev. I give a modest one back, not wanting to reveal the punishment he is about to receive. I settle into my seat and wait for the fun to begin.

Suddenly my right ear is nearly blown off by a cannon-like blast. I whip eyes toward my opponent. My stomach tightens as I realize what I face. “427 Vette! Could be trouble.” I think to myself, as I nevervousley grind my palm into the shifter knob. Another cannon-like blast rips through the night air, rattling my steed. I answer back. I know there is no turning back.

To some we were fools challenging each other for idiotic reasons. Our rides, mere machines...Hunks of steel and cast iron... cold and ugly. But they don’t understand. To us we were battling for the right to stand tall among others. Our machines, were raging beasts. Vicious animals, capable of destroying all beside us.

I stared down the road. A straight stretch one mile long, that merged into one lane. The loser must give way or face the oaks that lined the road. I readied myself, tightining my grip on the shifter as I watched the light swing enchantingly in the warm summer breeze. Then time was near.

The light flashes green. I bury the throttle to the floor. My tires scream in anger as they desperately claw at the hot Mississippi asphalt. I slam the shifter into second with all my might. My tire’s screams reach a fevered pitch and the rear-end slides left. I hook, and bright yellow bullet blasts into the night air, in hot pursuit of my opponent.

I watch the tach make it’s full sweep to the red line. I slam the shifter into third. The Vete’s lead is starting to shake. I pull even with his door and continue to slowly creep by. I slam my steed into high and stare the speedo as it wraps around past 120 and starts to come around again. We near the finish at incredible speeds. I push my car to the limit. I hear my 390 strain as I push it past the red line. Suddenly I blast ahead of the vette as he locks up the brakes hard, in order to avoid the tree’s.

Once again my car blasts victoriously down the road. I add another notch to my kill belt and another victim learns not to mess with the yellow fastback.
