93 Rx7 twin turbo 5 spd vs Stock 2002 GT 5 spd??
This guy at school keeps asking if i want to do a quick run.. You think he'd win? Unless he's replaced his engine, it has about 120,000 miles on it.. and ive heard rotary engines begin to run shitty at that kinda mileage..what do you guys think? Not a chance? hah, he stopped me on my way out of my girlfriends neighborhood with his lil ricer-boy friends (civic's) around his rx-7 (which ill admit, looks pretty damn sick..)asking if i wanted to run it.. im not gonna do it, just because i juss bought this GT, has 330 miles on it, not worn in..and if it was, i dont know how to handle a GT yet. Have yet to punch it and try out its real power..
anyway, responses welcome fer discussion ;-) shud make this a poll.

How does the RX7 sound? Loud? Quiet?
Race him after you get your engine broke in and learn how to power shift. Get some Nitto drag radials for addred traction and go smoke his ***. |

hey man at least put 500 miles on your stang, then change the oil & filter, i know how you feel, as soon as i hit 500 i changed mine then went highway running to get the feel of it, i was used to a 69 grande,just be patient, then you can fry rice lyonsd i see you put your ga flag on here too, i went to ga, & bought one fom the trenton chamber of commerce , before they changed it

I'd wait till u got some more milage on your car first. Aleast get to 500 miles before u start to run it hard. Then I'd wait till u could power shift it.
U could race him now, and not run it hard, but then u'll never live it down if u lose. I've seen some RX7's run.

I pretty much agree with everyone else on this one. Take a long trip somewhere and put some miles on her, then change the oil and go cook some rice!

RX-7 vs GT
The Mazda RX-7 TT is capable of low-to-mid 13-second quarter mile ET's, stock. Possible 12's or lower, modified. No pushover.
Your Mustang might be able to take him, (considering the high mileage on the RX-7) if it's broken in and you "Drive It Like You Hate It". Helluva race. Could be very tight. Don't make any predictions and don't bet any cash. |

I beat my buddies 94 rx-7 tt by a car and a half,he said he blew a shift and also when we raced he had only bean driving standard for 4months.So me and him are going to race again in the summer,he will not race till he gets his ecu done.
Good choice in color on your gt looks very sharp

Ya i know its a quick sunofagun.. I mean its torque isnt all that great, so i feel id get the lead on him for a while, but he'd be catching up.. He's not too good of a racer, but neither am i.. and yah im not racing yet anyway, i doubt i will ever race him any time soon.. Im almost at 500 miles, but i want to at least get the hang of driving it, feeling the power..
Only an idiot like him would get in a car and race someone without knowing what he's really in. He's been known to slip gears, etc, etc.. And driver is a pretty damn big factor in who wins, so i might win just because he blows.. Im definately not going to consider that though.

On this issue, I'll have to disagree with the RX-7 being anywhere near a low/mid 13 car stock. He'll be lucky to run a 14.0 pass with it. I know M/T tested one years ago, and while those clowns aren't exactly drag strip terrors when it comes to powerful rwd cars, they managed a very good 5.3sec 0-60 out of the car, but it fell on it's face to a 14.0@99mph. While it gets out of the hole real quick, in my experience above 80 that little 1.3L just doesn't pull. It's definately no TT Supra, which would run the low/mid 13 stock.
TT Rotory engines are toast with 120k on them. Get your car broke in, then go and dust him. If it's stock, with his current mileage, he'll most likely be a pushover. |

In my experience, magazine performance tests are notorious for being inaccurate by either having factory-tweaked ringers that run better-than-normal et's or the drivers are guys who like cornering better than straight-line racing and don't get the maximum from the cars the they run down the 1320. Most early (87 - 90) Mustang 5.0's were showing high 14's in the mags ("You can look it up") while I saw many doing very low 14's - bone stock - at the track (which is why I eventually bought one). I've seen 13.5's from a bone-stock '94 RX-7 at Englishtown (friend of a friend) so I know it's not that big a deal but of course at 120,000 miles that may not be feasible anymore; I don't pretend to be any kind of authority on these cars. Anyway, it's hardly worth debating because czstang isn't going to run the RX-7 any time soon and aside from the high miles, the Mazda driver isn't very good so the whole discussion becomes moot at this point. I just wanted to point out that my et estimation of the RX-7 came from first-hand observation, not a magazine article or from my imagination. |

I can certainly see where you're coming from, but you can also look at the mags 0-60 times on the 5.0. High 6's. They were burning out of the hole really bad. They got one heck of a good launch out of the TT RX7 to pull a 5.3sec 0-60.
My first hand observation is they are no where near a 13.5 car. I've beaten them solidly with a high 14/low 15 car from a roll. I've taken 3 of them so far, from rolls, from stops etc. As much as I'd like to think I have a low 13 car, there is no way in hell I do. Just the way it is. Is it the same crazy driving friend of yours who ripped off a 13.80 on a stock LX? Hehe, that's just not fair if it is. You can't use Mr. Megadriver 9000 to base car performance, heeh. |

RX-7 potential
That was Tony DeFeo who was a staff writer for Cars Illustrated (now Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords) who bought a brand new 1987 Mustang LX with radio delete and 3.08 rear axle back in early '87. Tony paid for it with his own money and it was his personal car, not a Ford factory loaner.
He documented his many runs with timeslips and lots of photos at Englishtown in the dead of winter ( the magazine paid for the track time) The whole story was published in the March/April 1987 edition of Cars Illustrated. DeFeo eventually ran a 13.7 and yeah, it was a stock 1987 SD 5.0. LX hatchback. Black. He removed the air cleaner entirely, pumped up the front tires to 50 lbs, emptied the spare tire and jack, played around with the timing (18 degrees was the best setting) and then just kept running the sucker (with 650 miles on the brand new 5.0) down the track. Tony eventually went from 14.4 to 13.7 - all documented with timeslips - and later, he went even lower but with gears and other minor mods. It can be done. I got down to 13.8 with gears, sub-frame connectors, Pro-5.0 shifter, timing, cold-air intake as well as pumped-up front tires and an iced-down intake along with a lot of back-road launching practice. That was on the track with good air. On the street with no prep I probably can pull a low 14 on average. With 116,000 miles on the engine I don't look for races but if one appears, I'll try it if I think it's a possibility for a win. By that I mean I don't run Vipers or new Corvettes or cars with audible blowers on them. I'm not a masochist, just like to go fast. As for the RX-7, well, every car has it's own personality and obviously a good driver can make a huge difference in et from one car to another so I'll concede that the RX-7 may not normally be a 13-second car (stock) but like a 5.0 five-speed Mustang, they have the potential to be when put in the right hands. Still, I don't believe an '02 Mustang 4.6 has much to worry about when racing a '93 120,000-mile RX-7 driven by a high school kid. It could be close but it probably won't be. I still maintain that czstang shouldn't brag too much and make no bets. Just race. If it's close, good for the Mazda but if it's a blow-off for the 'Stang, bragging rights are his. |

Agreed totally with you there! Man I wish I could drive like that guy!! The phrase 5 point slow would never had been coined if we could all drive our Mustang's like that.
