Need advice

My mechanic, which ran Pro 5.0 last year asked me if I wanted to be a partner in the up coming season. He has decided to run Street Outlaw this year. It will cost me $4k to be a partner. I realize this may or may not be a waste and I really don't have $4k sitting around, but I do have credit. Being a partner will entitle me to staying at the strip, camping out with all the other racing teams on the race weekends... grilling out, tall tells, drinking and what-not (Hell, my name may even make it into a magazine somewhere). It is real appealling to me but I realize there isn't much of a return on the money. We would split the winnings but it would never be a return on the money spent(is it ever in racing?). I figured I could go to atleast 5-8 races and he runs FFW, I always go to the spring shoot out(well, not if they have it in Orlando again, that track sucked! The crashed sucked too.

). Anyhow, what do you guys think? Spend the money and have some fun or save my money?

tough call on that one bud, but if you have time to go to all the races, hey you get in free right? might be worth it, can i borrow about 1,000. for an h- pipe & chip? , i'll put your name on my car, bwahahahaha, joking with ya man.

Yeah, that kinda crossed my mind too. That is basically the deal, he needs a new shortblock. I dunno, sounds good when I'm drinking though I feel I'm throwing money out the window, when I'm sober. It would be a hell of a good time though. Bud is a pretty cool guy and I like him alot but $4k could be one hell of a week in Hawaii, Cancun, Baja, or Australia. I'm kinda parcial to Bud, I handed him my shortblock, heads, blower(everything) pretty much in a basket. The first mechanic screwed everything up and I had to have my car towed to him, without an engine in it. He took a basketcase and put it all together for $400. I don't forget things like that.. he always does the work I can't do, and he always does it cheap... not only that but he's one hell of a nice guy... Hard to not like someone like that

To me it depends on your personal situation. The odds of making money are small. The odds of losing money are large. If you have a wife and children depending on you, then the answer is no, don't do it.

If it's just you, and you can afford to lose it and want to take the chance to have a good time...............then consider it. My $.02.

Rev, after all these years you should know I'm not married. I've been seeing the same girl, off and on, for about 8 years but I'm not ready to put her name on everything I own... actually, I don't think I'll ever be ready for that.. not with this girl anyhow.

Sorry Rick, I never really looked closely at your personal interactions. Not because I don't care, but I honestly don't think it came up for discussion much.

$4000 seems like a fair chunk to me, but it's your decision. There is a possibility for some return, but it is slim isn't it?

Rev, as previously stated, that is not an EASY call. But i dunno. Guess it depends on your current situation. Let me put it this way and I guess you can consider it from a different angle, perhaps:

If I had the time to attend all the events as you referred to, dude was a really nice guy who has really helped me out in the past so I know he's not trying to use me (I know he is a genuine person), he's a friend, I'd get to meet all those people involved in the game (it really does matter WHO you know, and sometimes more than WHAT you know), and if I wasn't working on a current project car (as I am in reality) and if I could financially handle it without putting myself in major debt and frustation (so that when it's "all over", I'm not out in the snow naked and without toilet paper, and I was looking for a change/adventure/ somthing just more intrinsically beneficial, I'd go for it. For me in my current situation, if someone invited me with such a proposition, I could not currently do it b/c of all the little things I have or plan on doing, It would just kinda not be able to fit in well, know what I mean... but I dont totally know your current situation.

In the end, the rewards of this little adventure may quite possibly greatly outway $4000 you put into it in the beginning.

Imagine the rewards:

1) Way more mechanic/engine/racing knowledge after learning from some of the best. This will last a lifetime.
2) The people you will meet and possibly become good friends with.
3) The freebies (parts, hookups, etc)
4) Spending the amount of track time that only others can wish about
5) Waking up every morning to do something you ENJOY
6) Possibly getting your name in Magazines and possibly getting offers from other racers...

THen again, you could save your money and wouldn't have a $4000 credit card debt with interest to pay off. Put that money towards something else that interests you. Spend it all on your girl.

Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me, but things are easier said and imagined than done. Just think about it some more and make a smart decision that you won't regret (yeah, easier said than done

)

As a racer I can tell you first hand theirs Major money to be made in parterning up with a good SSO Driver. Whether or not you decide to spend 4K of your hard earned money is up to you. But it would be fun going around all the tracks talking with people you see in magazines and such. It's a great ordeal to be involved in. I'm Tryin to Get Kevin to be my team-mate this year..but i dunno. He has potential to make it in Pro 5.0 with his car. So how about it kevin??

Either way i think you'd enjoy the experience.

I'm not quite there yet. It takes MAJOR, MAJOR money to run with the big boys. I would be looking at at least another $30,000 on top of what I have already spent. Shoot, with what I've spent I bet I could have a brand new Cobra AND a GT. And even then, once you're there everybody else is one step ahead of you. On top of that you have to have time to tear down the motor, overnight parts, stress, and more than likely won't make any money at it. Probably won't even break even.

Right now I am set to get married and have a business to run. Unfortunately I don't have the time to devote to that kind of schedule and still be able to run a succesful business and (soon) a marriage. My car already takes up a good portion of my spare time (and money). Maybe someday but I am pretty content with where I'm at.
