I don't know who came up with that at Ford, but I would love to know how much money he makes, to come up with stuff like that.

I don't know if they were the first to coin the phrase but many years ago Ferrari came out with one of the first "GT"'s. Their moniker was an abbreviation of "Gran Tourismo" Something that, at the time was sorta like sport touring. Going long distances at speeds that would keep your heart pumping.

MEDIK is right. GT originally meant "Grand Tourisimo" for the Italian road cars. I could be wrong, but I think that implied 4 seats rather than 2. It was back in the 50's that the term became used, if I remember correctly.

Watch some touring car races on Speedvision. It might change your mind about what 'touring' means.

Nope, no back seats in those. These did originally have them though, didn't they?

I think you're right about the back seat thing, Rev. It seems to me that originally GT cars were supposed to be fast four seaters that were a bit luxurious and very comfortable but still hauled butt. Sort of a sports car for long trips at high speeds with multiple passengers as Medik mentioned.

LX's are way better than GT's!

Though I agree there isn't much luxury. That's what Bentley is for...

IIRC the origin of "GT" was from the "grand touring sedans" of italy, literally "Gran Turismo Ongolocada [sp?]", which in turn prompted Pontiac to come out with the GTO. Can anyone else confirm?

Yup that is very true.... and will have to confirm that. That is where they got there name from. It was a race in Italy.
But GT & LX is mostly to distingush the two models
Like Camaro RS and SS (Rally Sport and Super Sport)

Pretty close Its Gran Tourismo Omologato, which means Grand Touring Homologated, which in normal english means the Authentic Grand Tourning Machine. Also Jon, the lx models were not just 4-cylinders, the hatchbacks and notchbacks came in 5.0 versions as well. The interior isnt much different than the gt's either, its pretty much identical. Oh yeah and the lx's are faster too
