Missouri ???'s
Hello to everyone in Missouri. I have a few questions. I am interviewing for a job in Glencoe (near St. Louis) next week and am a little worried about the emmisions laws there. As you can see from the car in my sig ('87 LX with a '71 351C) I don't think I'd pass any emmisions test (especially a visual). I just about have the car finished after almost 2 years and would hate to move to a state where it would be illegal to drive it! I also have a '72 Gran Torino with a stock 302 which I would hope would be exempt from most of the tests. Since I am From Michigan where we have no testing what so ever, I have no idea what to expect.
My other question is about drag strips in the St. Louis area. I am hoping there would be one close by. I built my stang for the street since there are no strips closer than 2 hours to me here in MI. If there is a strip (or road course) near Glencoe, I could just turn it into a track only car (don't want to though). Thanks, Patrick

I believe Gateway International Raceway is only like 5 miles from St. Louis. Couldn't tell you about the emissions laws around there.

I live in Missouri so I may be able to help out a bit. The only emissions test you have to pass here is a visual, which means they just look to see if you have cats. You can always just keep an H-pipe with cats to bolt on come inspection time. BTW, you can get a two year license here, so you won't have to get inspected every year. That means you will only have to put the cats on every other year.
But, I think there may be some extra emissions testing in St. Louis County (not 100% sure). I am not sure if that town you are talking about is in the county or not. Maybe someone else can help out as far as what the laws are in the county. I suppose even if Glencoe was in the county, you could always live right outside of it and drive in to work. Hope this helps out some!

Oh, and Gateway is just across the river on the Illinois side, so you would be close to a strip.

Thanks for the info guys! Changing hpipes for the inspection would be easy. That makes me feel better about the job. I would not have any problem living in an adjacent county to avoid the stricter testing. I am trying to figure out what county the job is in for sure and what the specific laws are.

From what I have found on the net, it seems like Glencoe is in St. Louis county, but I am not sure how close it is to the border of any other county. Check this out too. It has some stuff on the emission laws. I didn't read through it, but thought you might want to.

I dunno about emissions testing but as far as drag strips there's Gateway in Madison, Ill, which is right across the Mississippi River and one in Wentzville, which is a small town not far from St. Louie.
Hope this helps. |

Is Wentzville just outside of St. Louis? I have always wanted to get my car to the track and will be in Columbia this summer. Do any of you ever go there? I need someone to show me the ropes!

Wentzville is like a surburb of St. Louis I wanna say. I've only been there once. Well, it's more like a little town. There's a 1/4 mile track there too that is NHRA sanctioned. I can find some info on it and post it here later.

Don't worry about it too much. I can search on my own and find some info. I just thought that if you knew of a group that went up there very often that I could tag along sometime .

Glencoe is consdiered west County, which is very close to both tracks. Gateway it about 20 minutes from there, and Mid America Raceway (MAR) is about 35 minutes.
Emissions....well they suck, but I guess they are nessecary. St. Louis has a rolls emission test that is good for 2 years, a drive thourgh garage which is good for a year, and finally a portable one they setup on entrance ramps that measure exhuast emissions when you drive buy that are also good for a year. So, in a nutshell, I don't see the 351 passing the sniffer. However, you can get a waiver if you spend at least $250 in "repairs" to try to fix the emission problem. The good news is that the Grand Torino should pass. They go by what that particular car of that year would be considered normal. So while your Torino might put out twice what a new car does today, it is still allowable. |

Thanks for all the info guys. I leave Thursday to go for the interview in Jefferson City. In the meantime I have applied for a position with 24 openings with the State of Michigan, so with any luck I will be staying well clear of emmisions testing!!! The downside is that I would have to move closer to Detroit
Later

Well, the interview is over! That was a hell of a drive for a 1 hour interview. Took me 12 hours to get to Jeff City! I drove right past Gateway so now I know where that is. I go to Lansing (MI) to interview for the other job this Thursday, so I should know what I'll be doing in a couple of weeks. I hate not knowing where I'll be going! Moving just sucks!!!
