Of course the other way to express this velocity would be to use % lightspeed. In this case Mach 1 is 1.105632e-004% lightspeed. That makes it also sound slow.
1% lightspeed is 6,706,166 mph or Mach 9044.604!

I think I'm going to stop now

Unit and Tom, you guys rock

Pardon my stupidness (ahum), but doesn't the temperature of the medium affect it's density, hence provide another variable in the measure of the speed of sound?

Just a quick question for our professors...

Ah yes, the temperature of the medium also contributes to the velocity of the sound wave. The tempertures affect the density of the medium. Good thinking, Lizard.

Sound is affected by the medium, however light is not. Or is it?

I wonder what the barometer reading was when they decided to clock the speed of sound?

Lightspeed is measured as the speed of light through a vaccuum, but did you know a recent experiment shows that we can actually send an object much quicker than the speed of light? In fact, it's possible, more or less, to create time travel. With energy waves only so far.

Oh yes, some scientists rigged up a chamber with a lazer on one side, and a recording device on the other. When they shot the light into the chamber, it actually appeared on the other side before it entered all the way. I forgot what they had inside the chamber for the moment, so if one of you guys know, help me out. I guess that's time travel anyway.

In the most basic sense, light can be refracted, so obviously that would mean a shorter or longer distance as far as a straight line is concerned. That would indicate in the most crude fashion that the speed of light can be affected by a medium. Which of course is why the speed of light is measured in a vaccuum.

You are most probably refering the famous nutrinos (i don't have a clue of the spelling).

In the same line of though, Mr. Steven Hawking (the smart paraplegic dude), has calculated that teleportation will actually be possible by year 2250.

See... We are capable of transfering a single atom from one location to another without physical movement. With that in mind, the information needed to transfer the information of a human is equivalent to stacking CDs from the earth near to the sun. But at the current rate storage capacity is expanding we should be able to translate all the information of a human on a small media by 2250.

Light does change speed by medium, thats why lenses (telescopes, glasses) work. Also, my thing on time travel: if it is EVER going to be invented, we would know cause they would travel back in time............

Just think, you could go back in time and buy a brand new mustang (year of your choice). Just becareful not to let anyone know that you are from the future.
