Post good idea ....or not?

Here is the situation: I have my '82GT that has the 351W and it suffered a major wiring melt down last year. I have everything to change the wiring harness of the ignition system but it looks lioke a PAIN IN THE *** to swap. My friend has an '89 mustang coupe with a 4 cyl. and excellent body(perfect).
He wants to trade me this '89 for my 470watt Alpine system that I am not currently using.
I thought I would trade him and swap everything from my '82 to the '89. I would have a lighter and better condition car.
Should I do it? The only thing I don't like is the fact it's not a GT or LX and I would miss my leaky T-tops(LOL). Oh, and it's white compared to by black '82
It would be a direct swap...right?
What should I do? I miss driving a 351 powered mustang!!

I would do it but its all up to you. Hell, you could sell the 4 cyclinder motor and get ya some extra cash too!.. How much is your system worth. Then look up the value on the car to make sure your not getting ripped.

82GT,

If you're getting the 89 b/c you want an 89 then go for it, but if you want the '89 just b/c you don't want to do a simple wiring job then I'd say DON'T DO IT!! If you have air conditioner setup in the 82 and you've changed your heater core b4, it's not much more work than that.
I would think it would be WAY more work to swap everything from the 82 to the 89 than to just rewire the 82!

It's not a GT or LX?? Then what the heck is it?? That's all they made in 89.

Foxbody, it is far,far from a SIMPLE wiring job. I know what it takes to change a heater core with A/c but I think I would rather do that than this wiring job. My friend keeps telling me to wait and he will help me with it but you never know how long you have to wait with him! I put the engine/tranny in the '82 by myself and don't want to wait around for who knows how long for him to help me install a wiring harness.
You have me thinking now, it must be an LX. I thought it might be one of those GL's but i forget when they stopped making those.
I will think the whole thing over for a bit and then decide what I will do.

I don't know what your stereo is worth but if it's less that $700 then I'd do it. Then again, I prefer the 89 over the 82.

Ok, here is what is included with the stereo system:
Alpine 35x2 CD head
Alpine 150w V-12 amp
Alpine 300w V-12 amp
2 JL audio 12inch subs (w-6)(in a custom box)
Clarion 6inch 200w door speakers w/tweeds
crossover networks

I paid $1500 for all this stuff 2 years ago so I am sure the value is about half that by now.

Wink

Yeah you right 82GT, I shouldn't have used the word "simple". heh heh. But it ain't THAT bad either, just takes a little time.

I myself rather do engine/drivetrain/suspension work rather than electrical or body work, but I don't think I'd rather do the swap in this case. I'd rather just replace the wiring and keep the 82. Besides, you'd have to change your MW username

Naw, but you said it. Think the whole thing over a bit and then decide. In the end, make sure you do what YOU WANT TO DO.
