1/4 Mile Track ETs as of Sunday, 2-18-01
Well, here are the times and the problems.
Track times Run 1* Run 3** Run 4** Run 5** RT +.727 +.423 +.615 +.492 60ft 2.137 2.180 2.233 2.216 1/8ET @ mph 9.063/77.12 9.109/77.63 9.268/76.43 9.244/77.24 1/4ET @ mph 14.142/96.18 14.147/97.06 14.399/95.27 14.320/96.20 --- Runs 1 and 4, engine hesitates --- Runs 2 and 6 were total screw ups on my part. --- Runs 3 and 5, launched at about 15-1700 rpm, no stalling/engine hesitation (okay, going in the right direction). *Timing @ ~20 degrees **Timing set to ~14 degrees My evaluation as to what's keeping me from getting into the 13s and how to fix it. 3) NOT ENOUGH TRACTION. A friend of mine with a '91 GT had some Mickey Thompsons and he was hooking WAY better than I was. The thing is, I feel that I should still be in the high 13s with the tires I have now.(?) Also, I want to keep my car the same way as I drive it on the road (ie, no front sway bar removed, no slicks, etc.) 2) ENGINE STALLS/HESITATIONS. I found a way to correct this by launching @ ~1500rpm. But, it shouldn't hesitate in the first place (yeah, maybe the carb's too big). 1) DRIVER ERROR. I definately gotta practice. By the 3rd run, I decided to manually shift the C4 @ 5600- 5800 rpm and it helped a bunch. I just kept screwin up on my launches. If anything, at least I can say that I achieved the fastest quarter mile times that I have ever run with this car: 14.142 and 14.147 beat the earlier champion run of 14.161 1/4 mile ET (w/ the 3.27 gears), but that's not nearly good enough. So, going back to the strip this coming Sunday. I'll see what I can do. Please excuse the length of this post, but being the Chemistry major that I am, I gotta analyze everything. If anyone has anymore input/advice, enlighten me please. One thing that might help traction is to mount the battery in the trunk next to the right rear wheel. Use #2 cable. Run a ground cable directly to the starter motor rather than grounding to the body. Doesn't seem like moving 50 lbs. would matter much, but it does. That's because the weight is going from the extreme front to the extreme rear of the car. Use a Moroso vented battery box as that's required by NHRA to pass tech at the strip. If they're really sticky, they might require an external battery cut off switch. They've never made me do that, but they could. Just an idea to improve traction that it sounds like you need.

So these runs are with the 3.55 gears right?
97mph with a C4 should get you high 13's with some good traction. Either borrow some tires or there are a few other things you could check. You mentioned your timing. Is that total or initial? You should go around 30-32 degrees total timing I would guess would be good for your car. Also how is your distributor curved? You should get some softer springs and get your full advance in by 2500rpm or so. Also if you have your stock fan you should pull that out and put in a electric. You can get a 16" perma cool electric fan for only $77 from JEGS. It cools my car much better than stock and comes with everything needed to mount it. That alone may get you your 13.99 there. Also those holley carbs need tuning try playing with your jets. Also dont forget when you get there air down those back tires to about 18psi for better traction and air up the fronts to about 45psi for less rolling resistance. Your almost to the 13's Just a tenth and a half to go. Thanks for the advice guys. I have taken everything into consideration.
Rev, I plan to relocate the battery sometime later this year. Will use Moroso vented battery box. Skyman, I was referring to initial timing. I'll try setting it back to 20 and then try 24 degrees (total timing @ ~30 degrees). Gonna look into getting another vacuum advance, also (which may be the cause of the hesitations). Friday, gonna change spark plugs (need to) and distributor cap and rotor button. Gonna try one or two passes at 35 lbs tire pressure then around 28 lbs. I'm not as worried about getting too much fuel from the carb as I am worried about not getting enough air. Thus, will make sure to run the 1/4 w/o air filter. If after all this + a refined launch, if I still don't get into the 13s (for some strange, out of this world reason), I'm throwing some slicks on the back which I have no doubt will put me where I want to be (although I shouldn't have to do this to get into the 13s). Borrow your buddy's tires and give it a shot. Also, you may be shifting a bit out of the power band of the motor at 5,800 - may want to play a bit and try a lower shift point. for what its worth, y car slowed down when i shifted much past 5,300 Good Luck!
