Am I Next?

Can't help but get this feeling. Yesterday, it was snowy and very slippery out on the roads. Me and a bunch of friends were all at the bowling alley getting some games in. Friend's cell phone rings, it's his girlfriend (who am very good friends with) says she's in a bad accident. Get in my stang and haul *** to where she's at almost getting in 4 other accidents, I definately wasn't thinking straight though. Finally get there, the front of the car was pretty much gone. Some lady in a Volvo decides to do a minimum braking distance test on her car to stop a light she was almost at, and just turned yellow. So she refuses to drive her car, so I get to drive the thing with the alignment off and the air bag in my face back to her house. Good, fine done, right? No. Later that night we're all over playing pool when the cell phone rings again. It's another very close friend of mine, said he's in an accident, wants me to come there right away. He backed into another guy while they were backing up out of the driveway too. Guy was really cool and said his car had a little bit of paint but it was a leased car and he'll buff it out. My friends car has a 1 foot dent in the right corner of the bumper and shattered the tail light. An easy $1,000 worth of work. Insurance threaten to drop him last claim he made so it's out of his pocket. Well, now I'm still the only Mustang owner in our "group" to not have been in an accident. I'm feeling like I should get a ride places today. Sorry for being so long. ~Brian

I dunno dude, but it seems like you and your friends are the ones who may have the driving problems (FORGIVE ME IF I'M WRONG, JUST A SUGGESTION-I know you said it was slippery out there, but that is when you adjust your driving practice and drive even MORE cautiously and slowly).

The female running into the back of someone (that's a hard thing to do if you're paying attention and not driving too close to someone), your friend backing out of his driveway and hitting someone (yeah, I've seen those people who start backing out first and THEN look back instead of looking b4 and WHILE they back out) , and you almost getting into "4" other accidents on your way to see the girl. How old are you guys? I know it may sound like I'm belittling your pain, but I'm not. It just seems to me that you guys are the ones that need to learn how to drive better in those conditions and be more careful. And yes you will be next if you don't be more careful.

I guess it depends on how much you love your car and how much money and time you put into it yourself, determines how much you take care of it and how long it lasts. Yeah, of course, there are exceptions to this, but few and far between. Take care and be careful.

We're all 18 and in your eyes, immature But those "4" accidents I almost got into to, weren't major. This all happened on a very populated road, so traffic was backed up for miles, and I was trying to get the accident faster (I beat the cops by 8 minutes) so I elected to take the shoulder route and some other people tried to do the same and almost hit me, and my car went off spinning in an open field and I just left the car there because we 200 feet away from the scene. She refused medical attention but I thought she should have gone to the hosiptal. I've been driving longer than any of my friends (3 years on an everyday basis) and have had my Mustang for 9 months, drove my mom's 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT before that, and I don't have any tickets, accidents, or anything like that. I see myself as the best driver too, I just feel I'm more alert and have the ability to drive defensively better than them. The backing up thing was stupid, I'll admit that, but the girl pretty much couldn't do anything but slam on her brakes as she did. Even with the snowy conditions there was about 40 feet of skid marks leading up to her car. Doesn't have ABS so I assume they locked up. Then my friend backing up, was trying to avoid another car parked and ended up hitting another one, just goes to show you, don't focus on one thing. In the end, I think I'll just stay in today and let this cursed weekend pass me. ~Brian

no one can prevent everything, but there are things to help minimize the risks...

eyes open, radio down, not talking if you're with people in the car.

give other people space (3 or 4 car links)even more if its a real heavy stormmor visability is nada. try not to ride in clusters on streets or freeways if you can manage.. control your part of the environment to prevent accidents.

Seriously dude, y'all need to calm down. At 18 you're not as good a driver as you think you are, no matter how good you actually are.

I would stop driving in your town, from fear of meeting one of your friends. There is an art to driving in snow (and rain) that y'all should really practice.

Just a thought, before someone gets hurt.

Here is my 2cents:

first lets look at options:

1. keep driving your mustang everywere (greater risk of a collision)
2. Have friends drive you around (you become a mouch and you cant drive the stang)
3. (my choice) get a beater, drive mustang cruise nights and nice weather.

I realize that you might not be able to afford a beater, but keep in mind, I was able to find a 87 lx 2.3 (need minor mech.) for $200 CND, or an 88 f150 (no mech. required) for $1000 CND. now if one of those gets another dent, no big deal, the baby is safe.

The year I bought my '88 I tried to drive one day in the snow, needless to say I depended on mom, dad and friends to be my personal chauffeur.

It great... except when they had to pick me up a 0300 in the am, dad wasn't too impressed.

Rev: I'm not looking for sympathy, I'm just hoping some people can hopefully learn from my mistakes.
Deuce: I know I'm not the best, never said I was and I know I'm very far from it. I said I feel like I'm a more alert driver than my friends. I feel like my Mustang has taught me so much about the "art" of driving in the snow and the rain. Before this I drove a front wheel drive car with traction control, never slid in that thing. My Mustang scared the crap outta me in the rain the first time I had it out, just couldn't get ANY traction, now I rarely ever slide because I'm cautious. My dad took me out in my Mustang into a huge empty lot and had my spin donuts and made me recover from them, I've actually taught some other people the same technique in their cars in an empty lot (heck no they ain't driving mine!) But besides those 2 accidents, I saw 4 others that day, one was a 4 car one with lots of smashed cars and thousands of dollars of damage. Right now I'm not afraid of myself, but the other idiots out there that *think* they can drive the posted speed limit. Anyways, thanks everyone. ~Brian

and Blocker: I'm hoping to get another car for next winter, just have to get threw this one. I really want a Mark VIII but it depends how many summer jobs I get. I got a full time one and one part time, not sure that will be enough though Trying to pay off my current Mustang and insurance (18's a B!tch). I know where you're coming from though. But don't think I don't think about that, but being 18 and still in school, money is somewhat tight. My Dad was pushing me to build my motor and the other day I finally told him I have to wait until my bills are paid off and I have another car. He was pissed at first but is getting over it. He's been a high performance engine builder for 25 years and I guess wants to build me a motor, (he never even drives my car, so don't ask ) But anyways, I've talked enough these posts. ~Brian

Yeah, my Dad is pretty cool, I've learned so much from him, but like right now he wants me to not buy another car, and build-up a 800hp blown 408. I don't think that will be exactly streetable. I want to pickup a daily driver then I can take my car down for months and not having to worry about getting to school and work everyday. Oh well, enough of my family ~Brian
