Thumbs up Excellent Mustang "FIX" Post (true classic!)

This is one of my favorite “FIX” posts from that network I belong to. It was emailed to me about a year ago, but I thought you guys (and gals) would get a kick out of it. The Original Message and the Test and Repair Data were in the first email, asking for assistance. The Update followed a couple days later, and the Fix followed a couple days after that.

Enjoy.

From an iATN email:
Quote:

Ford-Drive: 90 Ford Mustang GT, Poor-idle/Misfire

1990 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 L

Trans: Standard
Mileage: 80,000 mi
VIN: 1FACP45E6L
Fuel: EFI
Ignition: Dist
Emissions: OBD1

Symptoms: Poor Idle Quality, Misfire
Occurs: Always

________________ ORIGINAL MESSAGE ________________

After cust. installed plugs and wires, this Mustang runs rough at idle.
Checked plugs; ok, check firing order; ok, fuel pressure in range. Cust told
me he had a vac leak before, so went looking for that; none found. Motor
seems stock and car very clean. He did tell me it has been starting to run
rougher lately. I pulled injector connector off (the one I could get to) and
no idle change. Have inj. pulse. Do these things clog? Above idle (1500 and
up), no noticeable miss. I'd like some Mustangers input. Thanks Charlie

_______________ TEST AND REPAIR DATA ______________

Checked for codes and none were found.

RELATED REPAIR HISTORY

Owner installed Split Fire plugs and 8mm Accel wires

___________________ UPDATE ____________________

Thanks to all who responded. Well it was back to work after a day off. Went
back to basics on this Mustang. Did a compression test; found #7 cyl. dead
(odd with only 80k on it). Spoke to owner on what he'd like to do; he said
he might look into a crate engine from Ford Motorsports. Well I guess you
can't forget basics on engines with under 100k on them! Thanks again Charlie

______________________ FIX _____________________

Hi all, Posted an update, but here’s the fix: Cust ok'd a tear down. You
would not believe what I found!; one of the air box hold down clips made
it's way to the #7 cyl. intake valve, holding it open! Here’s something
somebody could market! Maybe some company out there should come up with a
screen to cover the tb. Thanks all who wrote Charlie

LOL. No it wasn't me.. I was just trying to figure out how that could have happened. Sounds like someone was missing more than one loose clip

I had a friend who dropped his air cleaner wingnut down his carb last year. Was a Chevy 305 in a '85 Camaro. POS. Ran it for a while like that because he didn't care. Took a chunk of metal out of one of the pistons. Tore it all to heck. He had a 350 to put in it though. 350 blew up a couple weeks later. Sold that car, has a '92 RS with a stock 305. Gutless.

I just did a search of the oldest topics in the blue oval lounge, and wanted to mess with Chris and reply to one of his old ones, and saw Mustang Marty, and wondered if that was Crazy Horse. hehehehe
