man i got spanked when i was a kid i don't have any mental problems....(well i did own a chevy at one time) ...my parents never hit me out of anger once. and never got spanked more than twice and only got spanked for doing something wrong. and if i didn't get spanked i had to stand in the corner for 10 minutes. it worked for me i didn't turn in to a little brat. but hey everyone has there own opinion on this topic and this is mine. later all

My parents never used the belt/paddle technique....but if I ever f'ed up I'd get my bare *** got spanked a couple times. That is pathetic about the "mental" problems and stuff... I was never punched, but if I said a bad word or something I'd get a quick slap to the face. Nothing to cause a red hand print or a loud slapping noise, just a little whack. My parents never "abused" me or anything.... I always learned after a spanking.... It definitely kept me from doing wrong things. If I thought I was just going to get yelled at for doing something wrong that I wanted to do, I'd pry do it. If I knew I was going to get spanked for it, hell no would I do it, ya know?

My children will be disciplined. Maybe I won't spank them, but they will know not to do it again. No way in hell will I just leave the room and count to 10 and come back later. That's complete BS. Parents need to teach their kids to be respectful and know what's right. Leaving the room and counting to 10 is not an effective method.

When we stop using common sense and start letting 'experts' tell us how to raise our kids, the trouble really begins. Not all parents are ideal but most normal mothers and fathers have the right instincts.

A child should always have respect for the parent and the parent needs to be fair with the child (don't treat a 10-year-old the same way you treat a 5-year-old) and rules should be reasonable and clear. Any punishments threatened should be carried out, including a spanking, but if you have to spank every day, there's a clearly a problem.

I believe that telling a child they're 'stupid' or 'ugly' or anything hurtful does more long-term damage to a child than any spanking will ever do. To a young child, the parent is their whole world. When their world is threatened by the withdrawal of affection or hurtful words, it scars.

No one would advocate beating or any kind of real physical abuse that does damage but to spank an unruly child is not dangerous to their mental health, now or later. Never has been, despite the experts now claiming the opposite.

Unfortunately, in the 'Nanny-State' we're turning into in America, such spankings could get you hauled into a Social Services/Child Protective Services hearing and you could lose custody of your own flesh and blood, over a spanking, with the case worker no doubt quoting this kind of 'study' to justify the state claiming you're now unfit to raise your own child.

It's happened., so parents, be warned that the child you raise may have your name, but the socialists running the state & county Child Welfare departments have their own built-in, legal claims on that child and will call them in if you give them the opening. After all, 'It Takes a Village' to raise a child.

What a load of crap. Here's my .02 on child rearing...

Parents are responsible for shaping the way a kid interacts with the world. If you do not discipline a child, they will not understand the limits of society.

Some behaviors in society have immediate phyiscal resluts. This is the place that spanking has in childrearing. You gotta teach them that if they mouth off, or some behaviors, somebody out there is going to beat them down. I DO NOT condone abuse, and I think spanking is different.
Other behaviors result in seperation from society, ie jail. This is known as a 'time out' to kids.

The secret is to use them both appropriatly and consistently. At least from what I have observed as a student of child rearing. When they are misued, or not used at all, is when problems arise.

This Elizabeth Gershoff, simply amuses me. I wonder how many children she actually has and not the number of children that she studied to write this heinous report. I dont not have any children, I however once was a child. I got spanked and look at me. I turned out ok. My mom and dad spanked me with a belt. That hurts like a mofo and stil lyet I turned out OK. I would be willing to bet that this rich ***** snob of a doctor was spanked as a child, has some serious mental incapabilites herself and is using this study and science to get back at her own parents.

Its people like this that **** up society for the rest of us. When I have children, when they disobey me or thier mother they will be spanked. At home, in the grocery, anywhere in public. And then when one of these non-spankers tells me thats unfair and cuel I'm gonna kick thier *** for opening thier mouth and telling me how to raise my kids. Unless you have had sex with my wife, you stay out of the way we choose to raise our children.

I would so love to hear that. Its time we as a society start taking responsibility for our actions and believes and stoip handing them off to scientist and mommy and daddy. Get your thumb outta your mouth and grow up you big cry-baby.
