You may want to expand your search parameters.

The LX's are the same from 1987-1988(non CA), and from 1988(California-1990.) They made changes to the wheels in 1991 (big changes, the old 10 holes aren't usually associated with the best looking wheels for Mustangs). After that, in 1993 Ford went to cast pistons instead of forged. The 1993 cars got really crappy computers too.

The GT's follow suit with the LX for changes.

The real "Cobra" was available in 1993 models only. The 1987-1992 Canadian Cobra's were merely GT's rebadged.

The lx is lighter, therefore better for the drag strip. The trunk models are the best.

Maybe I'm alone here but... I like the phone dial rims. I had them on my 85 xr7 and on my 89 lx. I like them better than the 90 gt rims.

Here's my opinion:
'89-'92 LX 5.0L notchback (not the hatchback)

Here's why:
Speed density fuel metering system adapts better to modifications ('89+ 5.0L's all have speed density, which measures the incoming air rather than calculating it)
Notchback is a bit lighter than the hatchback and a hell of a lot stiffer (which is the fox mustang's weakness anyways)
Better brakes than the pre-'87 (not sure on when mustangs first came with 10" rotors rather than 9") and also 10" drums on the stronger 8.8" rear axle.
stock these cars could easily run low 14's and were the car of choice for the police package because of the lighter weight and frame rigidity.
Good luck on your purchase!

Thumbs up

I'm partial to the notchback too...imagine that!

I really don't think there is that much difference in weight b/t the notch and hatch as one may think. The notch is probably a little stronger than the hatch, but the hatch is probably better for less wind drag. (not totally sure on this one, just seems logical.)

So, having said all that, go with what YOU like, what you want, and what you think is the best. Although, I would stay away from the 93 Cobra due to a lack luster computer, and more pricey - I'd save money buy purchasing an LX (notch...hehe) and buying some good heads, cam, exhaust, etc.

Good luck with your decision and welcome to the board.

Exclamation

hey 84 LX agree with you on the notchback, they are stronger ford switched to mass air in 89 except 88 california cars they came with mass-air the speed density setup was used from 86-88 it doesn't respond well to major changes cams, heads, so if you plan on any major changes i'd go with mass air unless you get a sweet deal on a s/d car then convert it to mass air
