Default A problem with the taurus already!!

Well, it hasen't even been 24hrs yet and something needs fixed on the taurus I bought my g/f yesterday!!
She came in and told me that there was steam or something coming out of the defrost vents inside.
I went to check it out and I told her the heater core was bad.

Does anyone know how hard it is to fix a heater core in an '88 Taurus? It has A/c too. I hope it's not as tough a job as a mustang heater core.
I think I am just going to bypass the core as "quick fix" until winter or until I find out how hard it will be to fix.

If you bought it from a dealer, I think by Federal law, they must give you some sort of warranty.

If not, guess you'll have to get your tool box out.

You bought an 88 Taurus?!

Damn, dude...have you SEEN the TSB and recalls on that baby??? I worked at several Ford dealers for almost 2 years, and I have NEVER EVER seen a car with as many problems as a Taurus from the late 80s-early 90s. As unreasonable as it sounds, I would cash out on that car immediately. If you can't (yeah, I know it was an unreasonable suggestion ) I hope you got lucky and picked one with a Wednesday motor!!

Have the head gaskets been redone yet?

Default Head gaskets look replaced

Mustangbelle, I noticed gasket sealer on the intake and it appears to have different valve cover gaskets. I am hoping that this is an indication of repaced head gaskets.
Today I had to bypass the heater core, replace the temp sending unit to the gauge and I installed a new radiator cap.
Next I plan on flushing the cooling system, oil change and serpentine belt. All this car has to do is last us until next income tax time. It's inspected until 4/03 so I don't plan on needing it inspected during the time I own it.
It has 91K on the odometer and I hope this is another good indication the head gaskets are replaced.
I just need this car to last me a year......that's it ..........and then I will unload it on someone else and get a really nice car for her.

Exclamation the Tortoise

well our shop charges $50 an hour. those arent accurate times. it was just off the top of my head. it may be more, it may be less. so you are looking at between 300-500 in labor alone. that doesnt include recharging the A/C if it works or parts!

Yeah, if you saw what looks like new gaskets, and also the high mileage, I would bet that they have indeed been done *whew*!

Well I will pray for you my son, and hope that bull gets you through the year

Do you think if I bought a Chilton manual for it that I could do it myself?
I get the idea that it's more time consuming than anything else.......true?

SRV wasn't very far off. The book time w/ AC is 8.8 hours, and w/o AC is 7.6 hours. That's for a shop, not a backyard mechanic. You can usually double that time the first time you do it, especially if you don't have any factory info.

Take care,
-Chris
