Lightbulb Pronouncation

FISH

it's "fish", re-spelled to demonstrate the inconsistency of English spelling:

"gh" as in "cough", "o" as in "women", "ti" as in "nation".

Been around quite awhile; like 100 years or so. Clever.

DOH!!! He didn't even let anyone else give it a shot. I found out about the odd pronouncation from a band I like alot called Ghoti Hook. Not all of you would like that band.

Anyway, some guys in lock up with me didn't believe me and I had to argue my point. Unsuccessfully, I might add. They said I was full of chit and dismissed it. Oh well, huh? Anyway, Later.

So, MR 5.0, what is this all about?

George Bernard Shaw (English playwrite) first coined the term 'ghoti' back in the early 20th century. His rationale was to show off his literary prowess and also to demonstrate how ridiculous the English language can be.

He wasn't entirely successful ('ghoti' never really caught on) but his example still stands.

Hey folks, I'm really sorry if I spoiled anyone's fun but when a post asks for a pronunciation, I don't know any other way to respond than with (what I thought was) the correct pronunciation. I just happened to be the first person to reply.
I could just as well have been wrong.

bigwhitecobra,

I've heard Ghoti Hook. We used to stock their Cd's at the bookstore I worked at during my undergrad at WBU. They are a Christian band, aren't they? Remind me of their style...wasn't it more towards a Ska/Rock style?
