Question Odd Question

OK the house I live in was built in 1952 and it has a crawl space under it. Not enough room to actually crawl under, but enough for animals to go under and hang out. The problem with this is that, sometimes animals go under there to die, maybe because it's a safe place. We have had about 4 animals die under there since I've been here. (6 years) I'm getting tired of it, and especially tired of the GOD AWFUL stench that comes up for weeks from the rotting corpse, that makes it unbearable to live and breathe. I can never reach the animals, to get them out, so I was wondering if someone might know a way to get rid of the smell? I have incense burning, but even that only masks the smell, and sometimes it hits ya. Help!!!

How do the animals get under there... I think the 1st step would to try to stop them from coming down there.... hell just fill the hole with sand, if there is nothing underthere it can't hurt.

Get about 500 boxes of baking soda and throw under there

Sucks to live in Florida!

Cant you get a long pole with a sharp hook on the end and drag it out? Maybe you should put screens on the bottom part of your house.

hey joe, ii live in a depression era house also, usually unless the previous owners renovated the place an filled in a porch or builto on, somewhere there should be a small crawl space in the house that connects to under the house.. best bet is to block off the crawl space from out side. we had the same problems, jus put a heavy piece of 2x4 over the hole like on a hinged gate with a lock, allowing you access to the underneath if need be, but keepin the kritters out.

Default suggestion...

Something to think about might be putting up some sort of see-thru netting in front of the crawl space. I guess it depends on how big the opening is. That way it would still be venilated yet no animals would be able to go in there. Also for the stentch there's a very strong spray you can buy that neutralizes the air. I forget the name of it right now, but one spray does the job. My old roommate used to use it all of the time. I think she got it at like Wal-Mart in the automotive department actually. I used to complain about her smoking, and after she would spray that, I couldn't smell it at all.

THere's a product called XO that will take the smell out of a skunk. I was introduced to it after our house burned down and needed to de-smokify some of the remnants. Since then, I've used it on a number of smells and it's worked on all of it. There's another product called Noseguard that we use to control mercaptain releases and it does a good job. If it'll kill mercaptain, it'll kill dead animal smell.
Mercaptain is the odorant that is injected into LPG's and natural gas to give it a detectable odor. It is based on the same thoery as rotting carcasses, I.E, you can never get used to the smell of a deads animal like you can any other odor. With most smells you get used to it in about 15-20 minutes of exposure. Dead, rotting carcasses and mercaptains will irritate you no matter how long you are exposed to them. Like I said, Noseguard works on the nasitest concentrations of mercaptains so it should work on your problems.
