Question That black foam thing under the hood

Most stangs I see dont have one, assuming they took it off. What exactly is it for? To keep the noise down? Does it really serve a good purpose or should I rip mine out? It's pretty much falling apart anyway.

I believe it was originally for NVH - Noise Vibration Harshness control from Ford. It may have also protected the hood some what from heat. Most of the guys I've known, self included, have deleted them with no problems.

it's a heat shield, dont know about fox body's, but i know on 99+ it has a metal backing, for the fiberglass hood , they are a pita to clean.

i have an x-tra 2k hood, gonna cowl it, it wont have the blanket under it, but it's gonna just be primered anyway, for racing.

Take it off. All they are for is noise, but they look really ugly. I ripped mine off and cleaned the underside of the hood and it looks alot better

Yeah mine looks like crap.. I just want to make sure it wont hurt anything to take it off.. seeing as I figure it must have been put on there for a reason. I have metal hood so it will probly get a lot hotter without it I assume? I dont care about the noise.. I like noise... Also what do you use to clean the underside of the hood once you take it off?

Thanks for your replies

I just used a soapy rag to clean it. An old hot rod guy that I know said to wax the underside of the hood. I used a little bit of wax just to shine it up a little. As far as anything getting hot, the only thing is your hood will be hotter to touch when your engine is warm.

Its a blanket to smolder the fire, should your engine ever catch fire. The plastic pins would melt and the blanket would fall. I learned this from a hood manufacturer at an FFW event some years ago.

That is a fire blanket incase your engine catches fire, it doulbes as a noise dampner. I wouldn't worry about it, take it off if you want. When I changed over to a cervini ram air hood i didn't bother putting one back on.

lol.. hmm well now I'm having second thoughts.

One time, idiot that I am, left a rag in my engine after I checked my oil. I started driving and I started smelling smoke.. saw a little smoke coming from the engine so I immediately pulled over, opened the hood and there was a little fire goin on in there Luckily I had bottled water in the car and dumped it on it, put it out pretty quick. It only damaged a couple wires and a vacuum line luckily. So now that I know its a fire blanket I'm rather skeptical. However, I suppose if the car is going to catch a big fire, that blanket probly wont do much good eh?

If I got a new hood I wouldn't have the blanket, most people don't have it. BTW, have you ever noticed that the blanket has a running pony shape on it? I've had this car since 1991 and just noticed it a couple years ago when I was under the hood one night and the light hit it just right.

LOL.. I have had my car since 96 and probably didnt notice the pony for a couple years.

BTW I took it off today.. omg it looks SO much better now. That thing was just nasty and looked all chewed up nshit.

I also got a tune up finally the other day after probly 2 years or so and my brother and I replaced a radiator hose today. I noticed it had a crack in it earlier today and I knew it would blow if I didnt fix it. Funny the people that did the tune up didnt mention it was cracked

Just thought I'd share that with ya

Thumbs up WOW

Well all I have to say about that ! is I bought my stang on sep.10th 1990 ,and took it off on the 12th ..all it's sappose to do is ( 1.noise reduction.. 2. Fire supression.. and in 30 years i've never seen it stop a fire in the engine bay from destroying the stang ,and i've seen many engine bay fires ..to me .all it does is collect dirt & grime ,,and shake it on your engine.. I've had 7 stangs .and none were kept.

Exactly. I had to close my eyes when I was taking it off it was nuts! Crap was flying off everywhere.. it just looked crappy and greasy and nasty. Surprisingly though the underneath of the hood was clean and looked brand new!

Talking :) Hood Blanket

Rick...you win the prize!!!!
Ya, I have absolutely NO PROBLEMS w/ mine. But then again, it gets checked everytime I detail my engine. I just repainted Monday night the Running Pony that is embossed on it and when it gets ratty and faded, Black squeeze shoe polish works like a CHAMP!!!! Ive done it many times. It looks brand new. (Except for the slight indention/tear from my Chrome Oil Cap/ Breather that sits just a LITTLE bit high!) but ya really dont notice it.
I wont take mine off, Unless I would get the hood itself done up to look like the blanket, like a friend of mine has done, it looks VERY NICE!!!! But, his is not a daily driver, and IF God forbid, my engine would catch on fire, It wont hurt to have it.
