Talking Cobra 5.0 vs Cobra 4.6

Anyone have any experince or thoghts as to which is the more reliable, the 4.6 or the 5.0 Cobra motors? I am thinking of buying one after I sell my t-bird SC and wanted to get some input. Thanks. JL

unless your talking about the 93 Cobra, the 5.0 in 94-95 Cobras sucked. they have a bad computer. I'd go with a 4.6 DOHC

i would take the 4.6 dohc in a second over the 5.0 just my opion. dohc cam motors rev like u wouldn't believe. They cost alot of money but are easy to mod if u have the money

If I was going to do serious modifications on a 5.0 I would replace the heads and intake manifold, which pretty much defeats most of the advantage of going with a 5.0 Cobra vs. a 5.0 GT.

If I were going to just do light modifications then the DOHC has a 60-80 hp advantage out of the box and responds very well to basic bolt ons.

Neither engine has any significant maintance issues.

Well, a 93 would be nice but.. a dohc will smoke a stock 5.0.... and I mean smoke...

The DOHC 4.6 is superior to the 5.0. The 1996-2001 Cobra's will all beat the 1993-1995 cars.

I disagree with the 60-80hp advantage though. The 5.0 Cobra's are sorely underrated. Doing very simple mods to them nets tremendous gains on both cars.

Here are the simple mods I'd do to a 5.0 Cobra. 3.73's, Pro M 75, cold air induction, headers, hi flow cat, catback, E cam, GT computer. I'd say you should expect nothing less than about 310 at the crank. With drag radials and good launching, you should be damn low 13's.

Here are the mods for the 4.6. 4.10's, Pro M 77, hi flow cat, catback, 31 spline axles (1996-1998), 8-9psi supercharger. Expect well over 400hp, and drag radials are a must for good times. That combo should run real high 11's/real low 12's.

Never had my username described like that ...

Too add an opinion. The 4.6 DOHC is very sweet and with the right power adder ... impressive power.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll be looking for a 4.6 Cobra. I don't plan to make a ton of mods so it sounds like the better choice.
