Question 6pt. and 12 pt.? Tool question.

I'm looking a getting a tool set from Sears (craftsmen). There are 2 sets that I am looking at. The major difference between the 2 (aside from things like number of extensions or driver tools, etc.) is that one (the larger more expensive set) has BOTH 6 point sockets and 12 point sockets. The smaller set is about $50 cheaper and only has 6 point sockets.

Is it worth getting the 12 point sockets? All I'd really be using them for is my stang and the odd job on my wife's Cavalier (OK, OK, with the quality of that junk heap it will be more than an odd job )

I don't mind spending the extra $50 for the 12 point sockets if they come in handy, I'm getting really tired of not having proper tools

12 point are user to use, but there are some hazards to this. One, they slip off easier, two, they can round a bolt easier. But there are times when u were in a tight spot and wish u had the 12 point. Also, there are a few 12 point bolts on mustangs. I think your U-joint Yolk has them.

I like sets that have both.

I use both, and would be uncomfortable missing either. 12pt are probably more handy to have, but 6pt are necessary at times. get the big set.

Take care,
-Chris

I agree. Get both 6 and 12. They're both handy to have in different situations.

Thanks guys. I don't want to go cheap on tools, but If I don't need a tool then I don't want to buy it (money is needed elsewhere ). But I'm buying the tool set to avoid messing aroung for hours with the wrong tools. I did some work at Hammer's house a couple weeks ago and he has all the right tools, man what a difference it made!

I agree with Chris-- get the big set.

Whatever you do don't get cheap tools. I have a friend who has tools that are so cheap the stuff you buy at Advance Auto is better quality. Stick with Craftsman, you won't regret it.

Ya, I think Craftsman is pretty good stuff. I know MAC and Snap-on are also good, but I can't afford them. Craftsman has some good sales on right now that's why I'm buying.

Tools are just cool. I love them. I don't know what it is, maybe it's because when you are in a really bad situation and a good tool saves the day (and your knuckles!).

Yeah they are. I started to take some pics of the tools in my garage for insurance purposes. Here's a few of them:

I still need to photograph my air and impact chests, my grinding/porting chest, my mikes, my electrical cabinet & boxes, my carburetor cabinets, my paint cabinets, my power drill tools rollaway, my brake tools chest, my press and my scope. Then there's the three boxes on my truck, and my manuals in my office.

My life is very much invested in tools, but I still buy new ones every month.

Take care,
-Chris

10 to 1 odds, Chris keeps those pictures in his wallet along with his cats! haha j/k

nice tools!

to answer your 95, get both. if you were only to get one, get the 6pt. it seems to me that 6pt grip better on non-rounded nuts and bolts better than 12. i only use 12 for stripped and rusty bolts. i use Crafstman and Snap-On. i have alot of tools. i have one of chris's stand up boxes over filled with tools. i refuse to by a new tool box. i rather put that money in the stang!

nice tools Chris. very organized. says alot about a technician.

One if the first things I am going to do after I graduate from college and get a real job is get a good set of Craftsman tools.

I can't wait.

Snap-On tools are nice (that is what we use on Future Truck, a Hybrid Powered Ford Explorer), but they are just a little too expensive for me.

That's quite a selection of tools PKRWUD!

I bought the larger 241 pc. set. It has 6 point and 12 point standard and deep sockets (I have been waiting to get a set of deep sockets for so long ).

The Craftsman tools feel really good and the rachets feel solid too. I know I'll be collecting tools for years to come, but now I have a good base.

The only thing I'm missing is a way to organize my sockets. I HATE messy tools. I could only afford 2 socket organizers when I bought the set (that covers 28 out of 100+ sockets).

I know. i'm so pissed at myself.I have no self control when it comes to the stickers I get with parts. I think tool chests and rollaways look alot better, and more professional without any stickers, but I decided that long after those two combos were stuck. The Craftsman rollaway I use for my tune-up tools I bought just before Christmas (I went in looking for a socket organizer, and walked out with a rollaway...I have very little self control when it comes to tools) doesn't have any stickers on it, because I finally figured out the trick! Get some adhesive backed magnectic sheets from your local arts and crafts store, and set the stickers you like on it, then trim them out and place them.

Sounds like a very sick person that would have to go to such lengths, I know, but I'm telling you, that is my biggest weakness.

You should see my truck's back window!

Take care,
-Chris
