What radar/laser detector would you suggest...
... for under $170? I need to get one that's good and reliable.

I recently bought an Escort Passport 8500. I got it on Ebay for 259 +12 for shipping. I did quite a bit of research and settled on that one. Do a search to check on less expensive models as there is a lot of testing results on the net. None are much good against laser. Instant on is pretty tough to detect also unless you pay close attention.

There's lots of places on line to check them out to get specs, plus eBay.
If you do a lot of over the road travel, a cheap CB radio is better than any radar detector. The truckers know where just about every cop is. I just got back from Florida, and truckers called out about every cop on the road, whether a plain car, marked car, moving, or sitting in the bushes, and radar traps.

Yeah, you're right Rev I need to do some research, but I 'm going out of town this weekend and kinda want to get one b4 Friday. Need some quick advice from those who own one and how they like theirs.
Maroon 5.0 LX, you're right about the truckers, but I don't do much out of town driving. I was thinking about getting a decent Whistler (sp?) brand name one. Whadya think? I don't want top of the line, just decent quality. Yeah, I'll go check out some online and at Best Buy, but any other quick advice here is appreciated.

I got mine at Best Buy (DON"T GO THERE, they rip you off on price). I have the Cobra ESD 9550 and it works great. http://www.shopcobra.com/product.asp?sku=1756124 It goes off and the cop is about 1/2 a mile away. Just keep in mind that this only helps for 1 out of 3 ways they can catch you for speeding.

There is no real point in buying a Laser detector. It will only tell you when you have been clocked.

The point about the laser detector (non-laser detector) is correct. I know this from personal experience and I have the top of the line Passport 8500.

I always hear people say that they dont work, but mine has saved me from at least 4 tickets, which pays for itself. It cant keep you from getting a ticket in every situation, but every little bit helps. I have a cobra that i bought from best buy for 109$ with a 10$ rebate.

I have the Cobra 9250 I think that is the number? And it works really well. All my friends have Cobra's and they couldn't be more happy.
