Well aint that a bi**h!...(emissions testing)
It boggles my mind some times to see how our government can be soooo close minded on certain policies. I went to have my emissins tested yesterday and decided to see how clean i am with my off road h pipe. Well, i passed with flying colors! The guys at the dyno were really surprised at by how clean my car is. But they had to fail me because catalytic converters were not present on my car. As i right after me a piece of crap toyota came in to have the car tested. This thing had a smoke cloud a mile long behind it and was falling apart. It barely passed, and i meen BARELY!
It is strange how my car, that was soooo much cleaner than this piece, was failed because of no cats while this guy got to keep his on the road even though it is putting out more polutants than mine. Go figure. I'll put the cat pipe back on and pass next week. Light Em Up!! |

California's the same way - you have to pass a visual inspection as well as the butt sniffer.

that BLOWS. with a capital BLOWS. i can't believe they let some POS yoter off while you failed, with a cleaner car. it makes NO sense. if your car is clean, why should it matter whether or not it has cats?
P.S. that's an actual question, so someone please answer it |

Thats amazing, my car literally spiked every single meter on the machine when I had mine tested w/ the off-road H. The guy freaked out and told me to take it away.

Here were my numbers...
HC- ppm 158(reading) 174(allowable) CO- % .70 1.12 NO- ppm 1060 1258 RPM 1868 1250-2500 CO+CO@ % 10.9 6.0 min The page had PASS written all over it, but FAIL in big bold letters on the top. It's kinda funny. But i'm moving to Mass, where emissions are not required if the car is 14 years old or older 1987 mustang=14 years old Light Em Up!! Well, to play devil's advocate, there's your answer. The law is there to ensure that you put out the least possible emissions for your car as possible, not that you come in under a certain number, although a lot of people do. If everyone was set up to just barely pass, they'd probably have to reduce what the passing numbers are to meet the Federal clean air requirements. Since you didn't have cats, which is Federally mandated, they can just claim that your emissions would be lower with them and therefore, you must have them. The moronic thing is that if you just had gutted or phony cats, you would have passed.
With my 351W and Hi-Flow cats I got 19ppm HC and 0.00% CO. They didn't test for NOx here in Minnosota. Maybe someone else could tell you what to expect on NOx. The numbers you got were comparable to what I got when I was running regular plugs when I should have been running 3/4" reach plugs. |

I knew i was going to fail b/c i didn't have cats. I just wanted to see how my car was running. I am very satisfied with how lean it is, and i know that it will be cleaner with cats on. When i brought it back to have it retested, the technition just looked to see if i had the cats in and pushed a button that printed out a PASS sheet.
A tune up will lower the emissions even more, and i will probably weld some heat shields on my pipes to give the impression of cats. I was just surprised that i passed with the off road. Light Em Up!! |
