They have a silent type timing chain instead of a double roller, i'm not sure when they converted from a flat tappet cam to a roller cam so i don't know about that, they came with cast iron exhaust manifolds, most years came with the same heads as the mustang, The firing order is also different because of the camshaft. Also because of the cam, they have a lower power band to match the more restrictive intake manifold/intake plumbing and single exhaust. I believe they had something like 160 horsepower or something along those lines, but i'm not absolutely sure.
- I also think that the trucks got cast pistons whereas mustangs got forged aluminum up until '93 where they were hypereutectic cast ------------------ previous name: 84stangLX '84 Mustang 5.0 LX my LX '89 Mustang GT my GT [This message has been edited by 84LX89GT (edited 08-23-2001).] |

I believe the engines in trucks are the 302s and the mustang engines are the 302 HO (or 5.0). The only real engine difference is the cam base circle which is smaller on the 302 (the 5.0 shares the 351W base circle diameter). The truck intakes face the opposite direction of the 5.0s, the headers are different, and a different cam/firing order. The Mustangs with E7TE heads actually borrowed those from trucks. The letter "T" means they were originally designed for a truck line and "E7" means 1987. So Mustangs got some truck head designed in 1987. Weird, huh?

Yeah, they got the truck head because the E6 heads on the 1986 GT's were pathetic. Ford had to come up with something to boost performance, and quick. The truck heads were used because of that.
The trucks are also listed as "5.0". The 5.0 is actually a 4.9L, partially to avoid confusion with the 4.9L 300ci I-6 used in the truck line, Ford called it the 5.0. 4"x3" actually comes out to 4949cc. You know, kinda like the 351 is really a 352. The only other reason I could see Ford calling it a 5.0 is it just sounds better. |

but essentially all the bolt-ons should be interchangeable. I just purchased a 95 bronco w/ the 5.0. And i wanted to pull some "free" hp. Underdrive, headers, exhaust, and probably a filter charger. But i was wondering if the mustang stuff would work.
Thanks again |
