As for what i know the only difference is the pilot shaft on the 4 cyl t5 being a bit smaller. This can be fixed my getting a small bushing for it. Other than that there probably are more differences but im not 100% sure what they are. I swapped out my SROD 4spd for a 4cyl T5 and it works perfect. i havent had a problem yet.

No. The 4 cyl T-5 is not a world class transmission, and it's internals are weaker than any of the 5.0 T-5's. I think the maximum torque rating of the 4cyl T-5 is 240lb/ft. The input shafts are different as stated. You would do well to avoid the weak 4banger tranny.

The SROD transmission spoke of is probably as strong as any T-5 produced. It's basically a Ford Toploader. The F bodies also used the T-5, a non world class version for years after the Mustang got the better WC T-5 in 1985. They also used different input shafts, and I believe they had other changes as well. |

4 banger T5's will work in a v8 app. they have a 4 something first gear in which means that you 60' faster i know of guys runnin 12.30's and faster on 4 cyl. t5's all you have to do is take it EASY on them!! I HIGHLY recommend using it if you have it take it easy on it watch 3rd! and have fun 4.10's and a 4 banger 5 speed are awesome at the track!!

Let me roll out the facts here.

The T-5, even the world class units have been labelled as a "weak" tranny. Now, they may be stronger than what they get credit for, but running 12.30's on any stock T-5 would probably be pushing it as far as longevity is concerned. That being said, the 4banger unit has crappy syncros, and weaker gears. Guys are blowing up their 300lb/ft T-5's running low 12's/high 11's. Telling somebody that the 4banger tranny will take low 12's launching harder than the 5.0 T-5 because of superior gearing seems to be a complete contridiction in the advice that he take it easy on the tranny. Like I stated, the torqueload rating on the 4banger T-5 is 240lb/ft. A stock 302 makes 300. Do what you will with the information that I've posted. |

I i wanted to say before is that it works and while it is weaker it will hold up to some abuse. I have had mine in for a while and havent come across anything yet. But if something goes wrong it wont happen over time anyways. As for torque handling i know the 4 cyl one only handles 240lb ft but the earlier v8 t5's only held 265. 89' was when they started making the ones which could handle 300lb ft. But if your on a budget, like me, you can make due with the 4cyl tranny, but dont expect it to last forever. But if you can go for a new tranny, im looking into a 6spd for mine over the summer.

The differences are many, first off the 1st gear ratio is 4.10, bearings, input shaft, etc are much weaker, I remember when I had my first V8 T-5 rebuilt by D&D and I asked Don JR. the same thing, can I use a 4 banger trans, and he laughs saying sure! for about 2 days, he said they purposely put one in a mildly modified 5.0 and street beat it as you and I would, and it lasted less than 50 hours.

Don't even think about doing this, it just plain won't work out. Why do you think there are two different transmissions? Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]()
