I broke into the 12s!!!!!
Errrrrrrrrrrr........wait..........nooooooooooooo. ......
Actually I never got out of the 15s.... Track elevation: 3520 ft Temp: 85*F Humidity: 50% I ran a best of 15.6@90mph out of 5 runs yesterday at the track. I had NO TRACTION! I was cutting 60's of 2.5. Observations from the track: 1. The track BLOWS! It's an airport runway and it's impossible to run without slicks. There were 2 other people besides me there without slicks. Everyone else knew there was no way to hook with radials, and that street tires just don't work at that track. I talked to a few guys and they said they knew I was just going to sit at the line and spin. Well, they were right. 2. I couldn't get traction anywhere in first gear. My first time I launched at about 2000 RPM and gave it full throttle, I probably moved about 5' the first second of the race. I found out that no where in first gear could I give it full throttle, the tires would just bust loose and the back end of the car would come out on me. I tried pedalling it, I tried easing into full throttle, nothing worked. If I was at full throttle when I shifted into second gear my tires would bust loose, the engine would wrap up, my tires would catch a little bit later, then it would do the whole "slingshot" effect thing. HORRIBLE TRACTION! 3. Other than my times being horrible, it was a good experience for my first time racing at the track. I was a lot more calm than I imagined I would be. I figured I would get really nervous and cut like a 1.5 RT, but I cut a .630 my first time up and was pretty consistent with that all day. 4. Before the track next time: SLICKS! Remove the front sway bar. Electronic ignition. Bring a small sprayer and put cold water in it to spray down my radiator between runs to help my engine cool off. If I can cut a 2.1 60' I think I could probably take about a second off my ET. I still think my car should be faster than a 14.6 or 14.7 though. What do those times equal out to at sea level on a nicer day? I know my stock '71 heads suck, but I just can't afford anything else besides them. Is that my only real problem? Here are my mods, just like it was at the track: 750 Edelbrock manual choke carb, Performer RPM intake, Edelbrock 224*/234* duration and .496/.520 lift cam kit, stock bottom end, stock heads (besides Edlebrock valve springs, lifters), 2500 stall, shift kit, Currie 9" Trac-Lok with 3.70s, front tires at 45 psi, rear at 30 psi on first run, 25 psi on every other run (no change in 60' time), BFG Radial T/A (295/50/15s), weight of the car was probably 3200-3300 lbs. I'm going to run a couple bottles of fuel system cleaner through it, I think my valves may be getting some carbon buildup on them. There was quite a bit on them when we pulled them apart two years ago, but we cleaned them up. It's probably about time to do something about that. They could be robbing a little bit of power. I dunno.....any ideas? Last edited by 6T9PONY; 09-02-2002 at 08:07 PM.. |

Sorry but your trap speed tells the whole story 90mph Is gonna keep you in the high 14's at best. Spinning or hooking trap speed stays pretty much the same
On slicks you would run about a 14.7-14.8 Dont let it get you down, the 1st time I took my 5.0 to the track the best I got was a 15.4 @88mph. Street tires are a joke once you try slicks you will wonder what the hell you were doing on street tires. Later,

That 90mph trap puzzles me. Since trap speed is an indicator of HP, and you have all those mods, I don't understand. Your trap speed should be a little but higher than 90mph.
My stock '88GT ran a best of 14.94@94mph on street tires.

Remember I was at 3500+ feet elevation on a 85 degree day with 50% humidity at the time of these runs. My best time (15.6) was on my 3rd pass of the day, and all three of these passes were within about an hour of eachother. My first pass was at 9:18, second at 9:43, and third at 10:15. So my engine was hot. Very hot.
Oh, yeah. I forgot to tell you there was a 2001 Firebird WS6 up there. The guy was a decent driver, but he never broke 16 flat because of traction. That's a justification of how horrible this track is. They only spray VHT down in the grooves, but the guys with street tires have to run clear out to the edge of the track. |

6T9Pony, what kind of ignition setup are you running right now? One thing i never liked about older cars (especially points) was how you'd have to be able to dyno tune the thing to figure out what kind of advance curve, initial advance and total advance you want to get out of it. Once you change all the stuff you have, the stock timing curve and timing in general has to be costing some power.
That's all i can think of why your car is not as fast as you want it to be. If you get it dyno tuned and get everything from the jetting to the timing changed, i bet you'd pick up quite a bit of power. Not to mention traction. I'm going to get some slicks myself because i ran a best of 2.14 something 60' at half throttle in first gear, off idle launch, because wheel hop/spin is so bad. That alone would dramatically better your time.

I am running points style ignition right now. I will install an MSD 6AL before I go to the strip next summer.
I would probably have to go to Denver to get a dyno tune. I set the timing by sight/sound. |

2.5 60ft hell i would have loved to get that on regular old street tires. I could never get anything lower than 3.0 on street tires. Ofcourse that was in the parking lot of california speedway.
A quick suggestion to you. When you get the msd 6al also buy the msd distributer. All you gotta do is pop it in and plug up the 6al it changed my car a ton when i did it. You will love it much easier than points and works alot better than the electronic drop ins. I tried one of those and it didn't work for anything. |

Many nights the altitude density gets over 4000ft in Odessa. So I know what you are talking about with the Elevation.
Racing at a track like that it definitly sounds like you need slicks. Getting that 60ft down in the 1.8 range would knock a second off of your ET by its self. Good luck,

Getting a 60' of 1.8 would be sweet, but I don't think my car has the power to push a 1.8, even with great traction. I only have 3.70 gears with an auto and a 2500 stall, so I'm not going to get very tall slicks. What do you guys suggest? I don't want to bog because I hook so well. My engine kind of sucks anywhere besides 2500-5200 rpm. I will try to launch as high as I can without sliding across the line, at least my stall converter should help me with that. I think a 2.0 or 2.1 is about the quickest I'm going to be seeing for 60' times with slicks until I can get rid of the stock cylinder heads.
