Looks good. I think people really just care about the sigs that have a life story, or song lyrics complete with EVERY SINGLE INSTANCE of the chorus

rustang girl 08-01-2002 02:36 PM

I've seen worse. A LOT worse.

Mr 5 0 08-01-2002 02:38 PM

Yes!

Yes.

The Users Rides section is intended for car photos, not the signature area. The whole signature thing has been abused by some members. It was simply meant to give a very brief description of your car, not list every mod ever done to it . Adding photos just adds to the misuse of what was supposed to be a line or two at the bottom of your post with a link to your User Ride entry where you can list anything you have and show photos and even video of your car.

It would be appreciated if our members would do that.

I realize that you are the forum administrator, and I don't really have any authority in here since I'm still new, so my opinions are a little less noticed, but I honestly enjoy seeing pictures in the signatures. I like matching cars with users in the posts. The user's ride area is meant for this, you are right; but I see no harm in wanting to show off your car in every post. I think abuse would be a photo album, not a candid shot.

We mostly agree, but its always been the "rule" to keep it to a minimum............

jj_jonathon 08-01-2002 02:58 PM

Maybe we should hold a poll to find out if people mind full size pictures in sigs....because none of us can really talk for the majority...

I think that's a great idea...where's the thread? ;)

The Deuce 08-01-2002 03:53 PM

I don't mind it here at work, but I've got dial up at home. Sometimes I don't even get to see the smilies. Throw it in you Avatar. That's where my pic is going, when I get a good one.

Dark_5.0 08-01-2002 04:01 PM

There I sized it way down. Surely that pic is OK.

Mustangbelle306 08-01-2002 04:01 PM

I think the concern is mostly the space it takes up on the thread...I think a signature MY size (see below :D) is good...could be a little shorter, I edit it every week or so ;)

But when you start adding a big picture, plus text, or just tons of text, then its not only long, but WAY too busy. I don't mind when people list mods and stuff, they worked for it, go ahead and post it! But when its a BIG *** paragraph with future mods, picture of their dog, etc etc....I kinda get pissy. I'm sure some will agree/disagree, you really should post a poll if you wanna know for sure :)

jj_jonathon 08-01-2002 04:05 PM

i did say that i thought a photo album was a bit much, but showing off your ride i think can be understandable...dark made it perfect i think....honestly putting your car in as an avatar (like mine) makes it so hard to look at and admire...i also filled in the user's rides, but i doubt many people have viewed it.. :\

jj_jonathon 08-01-2002 04:06 PM

dark : did you size it down twice? cuz if you did i liked the middle one :)

i've looked @ quite a few of the "user's rides". But, if you put a link in your sig to yours, I'm sure more people would check yours out. :)

Dark, IMHO The picture is a much better size in it's current, smaller state.

You asked a specific question regarding photos in signatures and I responded. I'm against them, as the signature area was never intended for photos. You have an avatar and the User Rides section to post photos.

Sorry if I didn't suppy the answer you wanted to hear but I didn't kill your dawg either so don't be so sensitive about an opinion that doesn't happen to agree with what you want to do on a free website, owned by someone else, that is quite generous to it's members in terms of what's permitted in a signature.

Where is it?

srv1 08-01-2002 09:56 PM

hey Dark, yeah your signature area was never intended for photos, but they give you the option for putting it there! that doesnt make any damn sense to me. if you are allowed to put in what you want without a limit, then you should be able too. the site designer is responseable for that, not the member. if they didnt want it their, then they should have not gave us the option for putting it there. DUH!

Dark to answer your question, no. no its not to big. it should be bigger so all the people complaining about something so idiotic can complain more. everybody should just wait until Dan redoes the site and see what you can and cant do. then we can hear people complain more! yippie!

what is the big deal? is it Dial up users? 15' monitor users? what? i have been on dial up with a 15" monitor for years surfing the net. i didnt complain, i went out and got myself a good monitor. not everyone has that luxury, but working hard and saving for years paid off. if i can do it, i believe most here can. clue me in on what the big friggen deal is around here and maybe i will actually give a crap! thats maybe.....

Topless In Texas 08-02-2002 12:09 AM

I like it!

I dont think its that bad! I've seen some websites where the pic of thier car takes up half the damn screen! Alot of people dont go to users rides...I know myself, have never been able to figure out how to get my cars pic on there! DUH! (blonde thing!?) I personally dont have a problem w/ it..but thats just me! :) So...whatever! I think it looks good! :) TNT

Mustangbelle306 08-02-2002 07:10 AM

Yeah I was gonna comment on that without being flamey...

I actually feel that MW is the LEAST liberal with sig content...which I ALSO think is a good thing. Every single other Mustang forum I have seen has these HUGE pics of everyone's damn car in their sig...waaaaay too much  I love seeing other people's cars but not that much :D

cyberstang5.0 08-02-2002 07:33 AM

IMO: It is ok to have photo's in your sig, but limit it. No body wants to scroll down 12 times just to read the next post. The sig part of your post is suppose to give other ppl an idea about yourself and your car. I have so many mods, it would make my sig long... I'll stick with what I have.... :D

Dark 5_0:

My point is that you are a guest here. Try to act like one.

A site redesign is underway and the signature issue will be addressed by the site owner, Dan McClain. All prior comments will be taken into account by Dan when determining the configuration of the signature area. That is what is meant by comments being noted.

Until then, it would be appreciated if you - and all members - would attempt to use a measure of restraint and good judgement when setting up your signatures.

Thanks.

WTF? Dark has been here for a long time. He is just as much part of the family as you or me. If you are saying that just because he does not work for MW or operate the servers (that keep going down) doesn't mean he's a guest. If he's a guest then everybody is a guest.... and if that's true, what makes up MW? WE do!!!! The members of MW is what makes up MW's reputation, poise, and respect. If we are just "guests" and not members, then this isn't really a Mustang Club.

Mustangbelle306 08-02-2002 11:32 AM

I second that. I think Dan sees us not as visitors but as MUSTANGWORKS (at least the forum side :))

Besides, Dark was just being snippy, not like he broke any rules... I wouldn't want to pry into your business Jim, but for the last few months you too have been excessively irritable when it comes to small stuff.

I know, I know, BELLE is trying to talk about being snippy :p but you just jump down member's throats over the silliest things...Nokia ringtones, not utilizing the "Search" option, etc. Of course we're all entitled to have "our days" but you could lay off a bit, especially when its not even a heated topic (politics, gender affairs, etc).

StangFlyer 08-02-2002 11:49 AM

Please... Let's not get all worked up over something as simple as your message board signature. Mr 5.0 is simply trying to do his duty as the Administrator of the boards, and his stance regarding the topic is one brought on by the few. Yes - there are members who have, and do, abuse their signatures on the board. Either listing 20 lines of modifications to their car or sticking in large (either in visual size or file size, OR BOTH) photos within their signatures.

Now, on the old forums (UBB) I had modified the program code so that it would only allow five lines, or so many characters, in a persons signature. I ALSO had images within your signatures disabled. It is true that when I set up the new forums I left this capability available and have no code modifications in place to limit signature size. However, what has been discussed several times between Jim and I, is how doing so has led to frequent abuse.

We do have to remember that half the visitors to MW are still using a dialup connection. In fact, off site I access the site with my laptop (on trips, vacation, events, whatever) and a modem. I know exactly how annoying it can be to check the forums only to have a thread take five minutes to fully load because people have fricking photos in their signatures. And, to see the same twenty lines of modifications repeated after someone's posts thread after thread.

Just look at my signature, and how I use a minimal amount of text to "let ya know what I've got", but link it to my User's Rides list so that if you want to you are just one click away from ever spec (and photos, sound, and video) of my ride(s).

As a heads up, don't be surprised if images are turned off in signatures and a character limit is put into place on signatures... Jim is right. Everyone has both an avatar they can use to show an image of their car, AND the ability to post a User's Rides listing and a link to it from their signature. In fact, the cool thing about your rides listing is that you can do this same thing in your signature on ANY Web site. You could be posting on XXX.com, and still link your sig to your rides listing here too.

You asked a question, didn't like the answer; get over it. No one is stopping you from having it right now. If the redesign takes that option away the world won't end, and it won't be personal.

Some people may think my sig is too long. They can limit the length, and I'll live. Isn't this supposed to be about the cars anyway?

StangFlyer 08-02-2002 01:08 PM

Dark_5.0 - Ya know, honestly your signature is exceptable. Your pic is resonably sized and it's 6.4k in file size. Unfortunately, many people don't size their pics small or optimize the file size to under 10k.. And, that's the problem. We could say no images in signatures should be over X k and 200x200 pixels in dimension. But, who wants, or has, the time to police it or keep people following those guidelines... I don't... I know Jim doesn't... I know we don't want to either... We have enough of a job just keeping the board where we want it now. Some times it just comes down to either getting run over by it or locking it down.

Honestly, if something as silly as not being able to stick a photo in your signature makes someone not want to be part of a great community of fellow enthusiasts, I feel sad for them... Unfortunately, it all boils down to the same old problem. Some people just can't stand being told they can't do, or have, something. Whether it's truly important or not.

If it makes you feel any better, it is Friday!

Dan-

Is there not some way that you could allow a pic in the sig as long as it conforms to specific dimensions (like your example), kinda like with the avatars or when you want to attach an image?

Take care,
~Chris

Mr 5 0 08-02-2002 04:32 PM

Guests and criticism

Dark_ 5.0:

Let me try to explain something to you and anyone else who may be interested.

Does anyone here pay one penny for using this website or do anything to sustain it? The answer is: no, of course not.

You - and every other member - use it, obviously enjoy it and contribute your opinions and advice to it when you feel like it, as all our members do, but Dan McClain does most of the heavy lifting here, including paying money out of his own pocket every month to keep the site running. He gets some help from moderators, like me, who do what we do for free. We depend on our members to maintain a grown-up, civil and reasonable attitude in order to keep MW a friendly, useful site. When we make some simple requests and are met with attitude and snide remarks, it's not appreciated.

Can you not understand this?

Dan (and myself) have spent many hours and much effort to take MW from a simple, home-grown hobby site to what it is today, with over 20,000 registered members and a good reputation within the Mustang and internet community. We value all of the MW members but the fact remains that you are still a guest on another persons website and as such, the owner, Dan McClain, has a perfect right to do whatever he wishes and make whatever rules he see fit. You might complain but as a guest it behooves you to accept the minor restrictions without pouting about it.

As his agent, I do what's necessary to maintain the standards set by Dan for Mustang Works. Sometimes, that means criticizing a practice some members engage in, as in photos within signatures. Dan and I attempt to make this criticism as civil and reasonable as possible, and for our trouble, we are often met with hostility and 'attitude', as if we had no right to make a negative comment. Sorry, that's unrealistic.

Dan will finalize the signature issue and your small photo will probably stay. What's the problem? Someone criticized you? C'mon. I take more criticism from MW members than I ever get in daily life and yet, somehow, I manage to survive it. You can too.

Sorry about the job stress. It explains a lot. Let's try to move on from here. I'm willing.

**********************************************

Mustangbelle306:

You seem to be under the impression that a mild criticism equates to 'jumping down people's throats'. That's unrealistic. You need to learn to differentiate a simple suggestion (or even mild criticism) from a personal attack. Big difference.

I have opinions and I express them. Being the messageboard administrator does not prevent me from telling someone they made a mistake or could do things better. Why should it? I don't give up my right to an opinion and free expression when I log onto the MW website, and neither does anyone else, including you.

I try to make my criticisms civil and look for the positive but your view appears to be that I'm having some sort of low-grade mental problem if I post a negative word to someone. Does that apply to you, too? Are you having 'a day' if you criticise someone or make a suggestion? I doubt it, so why do you project that attitude onto me?

Case in point: I quite often see posts asking questions that could be answered with a 20-second Google search, like the infamous Nokia ring tones. I'm not sure if it's ignorance or laziness that causes this. Anyway, on that thread, I did the search, supplied the links and casually mentioned that anyone can find this information by utilizing a search engine.

You seem to have noted and retained that casual exchange and obviously thought there was something negative about my post. I disagree and think your perception of what's really negative and what's just advice or a casual observation is somewhat skewed. Look, no one, including me, likes criticism but we're going to get it, like it or not. Fact of life that we all need to understand and try to deal with realistically.

When the day comes that all I do is post smily-faces and never make a negative comment without being criticized in turn, I'm outta here. Since that won't happen (I've outlasted many, many posters who thought they knew exactly how I should be doing my job) you'll just have to bear my occasional criticisms on various topics from time to time and try not to attribute them to anything more than what they are. Observations, suggestions, advice and yes, criticism. Just like you occasionally offer.

Belle, based on your record here on MW I know you're up to it so I think we'll be fine here.

Mustangbelle306 08-02-2002 04:35 PM

All suggestions taken and noted, although I maintain everything I said :) I know from experience that sometimes its possible to not be aware of how you "rub" others, so I'm not going to press the matter anymore than I already have.

Jim, you do seem to have forgotten that we as members do look at ads that do generate revenues for the site. I don't think anyone can argue with that. I also think we all realize the effort that you put in without any outright compensation.

You do seem to want to exercise quite a little bit of control over what members say on this board. Sometimes it doesn't go over that well. You might want to re-think how you relate to members. They are the lifeblood of the site.

you are exactly right that the members are why this site continues...but honestly have you looked at the size of the ads? lol....we dont come in here and receive 12 pop-ups and have to give 7 referrals to another site to get in....course that would drive away almost everyone...you need a happy medium, those ads keep this site up, as well as Dan's hard work which attracts us to this site...so he has the right to limit abuse when he's maintaining...plus im not seeing any unreasonable limitations anyways...
