Post Social Security benefits

I've been told that (at least in Kansas) if you're under a certain age and still in school with a deceased parent you can claim a Social Security benefit. I've heard of this before, but it was from a friend whose father had MS. My father passed away very recently and I'm 19 and still in school (college). Anybody know how to claim such benefits? I really hate thinking about this kind of stuff right now, but I've got so many bills they're about to gang up and choke the life out of me and I could use a little extra money.

Try this site: http://www.ssa.gov/ If you can't find it there, call or visit your nearest SSA office.

Hope this helps.

It's true...my ex-girlfriend's dad was killed by a drunken driven when she was really young, and she did collect some of his Social Security benefits. But I don't remember at what age she became ineligible, might have been 18 or 21. Ain't callin' her to find out, either!

Like Maroon said, try your local SSA office. You may have to stand in line for a while, but they'll tell you if your'e eligible and if so, how to apply for benefits. It won't be much, but it'll help out a college student. You might also be eligible for different types of financial aid for school. Good luck!
