Angry He's got "noss" man

What the hell's up with that word? Every idiot I know uses that word "noss". The first time I heard it was in that stupid movie, now it's everywhere. We must educate the ignorant that you mustn't call it "noss", or you will be associated with the ricers.

Maybe it's local. I moved up here from Van Nuys in '86, and heard it pronounced that way right off. I had a hard time not laughing!

Take care

A lot people call it that because it is easier to say and gets the point across.

Nos is a brand of a system but it does mean nitrous oxide system.

NOS or "noss" has been used for at least 10 years here as the a quick way to communicate a car has nitrous or whatever.

Saying N.O.S. or Nitrous Oxide Systems is longer and takes more effort, plus it's easy to figure out what people mean.

I think everybody that says carb instead of carbuerator or cam instead of camshaft, or rods instead of connecting rods, or tranny instead of transmission, or rims instead of wheels, or computer instead of Engine Control Module or Powertrain Control Module, or Engine Management Unit, or Engine Control Module, or anybody that says EFI instead of Electronic Fuel Injection, or 3.73's instead of 3.73:1 ring and pinion ratio should be considered a ricer as well.

I hope everybody gets the point here.

Also it pisses me off when people say putting a spoiler on a car makes it rice, well, damn, I guess all those late 60's Mach 1's and Boss Mustangs were all rice, huh? I like spoilers, and I would be willing to bet any fox Mustang GT hatch would look liks *** without one. Just because you want your car to look nice doesn't imply you are a ricer, it implies you take pride in making your car nice.

So everybody can cut the bullshit of trying to be rebels by going against everything the import crowds do to their cars because once everybody does that, you're no longer a rebel. You're a follower, just now the ricers call you a redneck.

It's all a matter of taste. I don't like putting 10k of ugly lookin mods onto my car to make it look like a starship when it only has 100hp, but I can understand the desire to make my car look better to me, or to take pride in my car and try to make it better.

I don't get why they think some of that junk looks good, but hey, their choice. When they think it's fast because they put a wing on, now you're talking something that ticks me off. That's ignorance or just plain stupidity.

Unit:

You're in good form today with that rant, and I agree that 'NOS'/'noss' has now become part of the performance-car jargon, like it or not, along with all the other contractions and nicknames for the various parts you mentioned in your post.

I always refer to it as simply 'nitrous' and to the mechanically uneducated I use the full name; nitrous oxide but then I have to explain what that is and how it works so I usually just ignore the whole thing and say "it makes you go faster" which is all most non-performance people need to hear, anyway.

A lot of the so-called 'ricer' stuff is really just a cross-over from American performance cars anyway. Spoilers were around for many decades (as you noted), and bigger tires, special wheels, scoops, etc are all part of the American muscle car scene and have been for ages. Even old 'Hot Rod' magaizines I've seen of '50's street cars ('50 Fords, mostly) show things like lowering, aftermarket wheels, fake hood scoops and big (chromed) duel tailpipes among other items, so this is rather old news.

As you said, a lot of things you see on cars now are simply a matter of bad taste or ignorance but a lot of uglyness is out there too as a result of all that ignorance and poor taste.

i had one of those 'bumb@sses' ask if i was running "nitro"! I gave him a look like i hadn't a clue, and he says "you know, laughing gas"

nitro...

to avoid lengthy contact, I just nodded.

it's like people saying "Xerox" when they mean photocopy, or "Kleenex" when they want a tissue. and im sure nitrous oxide systems are very happy about it, since everyone is automatically associating them with nitrous oxide.

Thanks Mr 5.0

PG, Actually, the loss of a brand name recognition is a bad thing. It means when people ask for your companies product, they may receive a competitors product, or not recognize that your product is actually a brand name.

Another example of this is laminate, which is very often referred to as "formica." When people shop for "formica" they think of it as a product, not a brand name so they really don't care if they buy the "Formica" brand, or "WilsonArt" or something else.

Kinda like how you call it Vaseline and not petroleum jelly? Sounds like something the Arabs put on their toast. Somebody else said that, but I think it's along the same lines.

I think the original post and all whom agree with it are just pi$$ed because a jerk-off movie like F&F popularized that name; BTW, "noss" sounds like horse$hit to me I might add. The Holley company would like to thank ricers everywhere for popularizing it.

Unit-
That was pretty good. I haven't seen F&F yet, and really have a hard time associating anything nitrous with rice. But, it was still funny the first time I heard nitrous referred to as "noss". I spent years hanging out and racing at the street races in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. Nitrous was part of everybodies daily vocabulary. It was usually referred to as nitrous or N-O-S, and nitrous oxide by the newbies. It wasn't until I moved north to Ventura County, which is 1/10th the size of L.A., that I heard it referred to as "noss". It just sounded funny, like someone who didn't know what NOS stood for, and was treating it as an acronym out of ignorance. Oddly enough, it's the only acronym (or abbreviation) I can think of that wasn't acceptable. The street racers up here called it N-O-S or nitrous, but the wannabe's up here all called it "noss". This was 15 years ago, but to this day I still don't know any racers who call it "noss". I don't mean any disrespect to anyone who calls it "noss", it just sounds funny to me.

Take care
~Chris

It's a little early in the season, but I'll say the Colts will be there =)

How old is everyone in here that is getting pissed at the way these kids are saying N.O.S.? You ever stop to think you might just be getting getting old?

I'm 30 and I notice stuff like that all the time. Fads come and go, kids learn new slangs on words, etc. No big deal. I always told myself when I was a kid that when I grow up I'm going to be more open minded toward fads that the younger people go for. I still catch myself asking "what the $%#@ was that??" all the time, but I try to not let it bother me.

I agree with 2FastLX. It is just the new lingo, so what is the big deal. I have always heard of it as "noss" and I am 21. Granted, many people that use the term are uneducated and don't know that N.O.S. is a company, but I was once there too.
